A ride that doesn't ring like crazy?

I personally don't like the fact of any muffling to cymbals. People will say the same about drums. I use MoonGels on my kit, but there's just something about adding some sort of adhesive to a cymbal that bothers me. Besides, it'll leave a mark on the cymbal whereas you can change a drum head at any time. Just my opinion. I have a 20" A. Zildjian Ping ride. Not much overtone and the wash is nice. I love the damn thing!

I would save for the K Custom. I have the 20" version of that ride and love it. it's dry but not too dry and the bell cuts but also sounds very musical, its not just a ping.

amen there. i have a 20" K Custom as well, and i love the dry sound of it. it cuts just right and then gets out of the way. for some things, though, i do find it a little too dry.

so i think i'm going to add one of the 22" sabian paragon rides, b/c that cymbal, IMO, is the epitome of what an A ping ride oughta sound like. zildjian, IMO, has been missing the mark a bit lately with their A and A custom rides.

FWIW, just b/c said artist is listed as playing said cymbal is no guarantee that's what they played in the studio, or even on that particular song. (or if it was even that drummer playing on the album :D)

and never, ever, ever, ever put tape on a cymbal. that makes me a saaaaaaaaaaad panda.

cheers,
wade

PS--good ride cymbals aren't cheap, but they're worth the cost when you're in the midst of the groove, laying down that perfect ride tone you've always been searching for.........

Tape is fine just make sure you use it on the bottom and are careful when removing it. A product called googone will remove any residue without hurting your finish. But if you want to get a new ride dont worry about names. Go to your store and try every ride out in your price range and let your ears decide.

Even though this may seem like an "entry level" cymbal the sabian b8 20" ride dosesnt have alot of wash or ring to it. It one of the most versitile rides ive ever used.

i dont use that symbol as much as i used to. even on an electronic kit the ringin sends me nuts. i just substitute with tom 2 most of the time

I know what you mean, I have an old Zil. But I have tried every ride in every store around here and they're all worse or just as bad. Nothing sounds like a recording and it could be b/c they're eq'ing out the clang or the lower end wash and the ping remains. I also play it w/ a lighter touch and that helps, not live, but if it's recorded, it can be boosted if mic'd w/ it's own. The ride on the Steve Smith double DVD sound really good, but it's still a recording, who knows the actual clang. I think that one is over $200 anyway.... I did a cool recording that came out w/ decent ride, I have to listen to it again to see if it was too much wash buildup, but it didn't make that impression on me before.
