There are so many deeply held beliefs on this board that sometimes I feel like I'm in a Bible study.

What's the best microphone for female vocals? What's the best microphone for Hip Hop? (hint: any USB mic will do), what's the best preamp, who has the best converters, the best monitors, the best computer, the best software...

On and on and on and on and on. Stop already! You are listening to music mastered at 44.1KHz on tiny PC speakers! Do you REALLY think you need to spend big bucks to get that sound?

Talent will always trump technology, but the fact is that technology fattens wallets. Gear manufacturers are selling a dream, and judging from the amount of gear available there must be millions and millions of dreamers.

Wouldn't it be nice to wake up?

I have no talent, but I'm okay with that. I just like all the lights, buttons, knobs, sliders, and driving my wife crazy.

The best microphone is the one that produces the results that you want. USB microphones should never be used except for podcasting - much better to get a USB adaptor (eg: CEntrance MicPort Pro) and use the mic. of your choice. It's then easy to use a different mic. as the situation demands.

No - not at all - anyone here will probably be listening to music mastered at 24-bits. 44.1 is fine (I have seen major recordings at Abbey Road mastered at 44.1) though many may master at 96 or above. And no-one listens to PC speakers, it will either be on headphones through a decent soundcard or burned to CD and listened on a hi-fi system.

Yes, talent is the most important thing in the recording - but you need the technology to capture talent at its best.

I am awake - but I'm not sure about you if you only listen on crap PC speakers. :p :D

I think you're off on that one, John. Most people are listening the first time on their PC/Mac, then with earbuds or through their car speakers or one of those iPod speaker accessories after burning to their iPods or iPhones.
Using a 'hifi' is only for us old fogies!

So I'm the only one that spends £1,000 on a pair of headphones then? And another £2,000 on the monitor controller to drive them?

I think OP has the wrong board; most people here pretty well know it's whatever works for you, and we don't mind the low-end of whatever. The proof is in the MP3 clinic . . . there is little correlation between gear and results.

That's not to say that quality gear should not be purchased, but the diminishing returns are obvious.

People here just have certain pieces of gear that they prefer over others...not a crime, last time I checked.

LOL @ this fail. This is coming from the guy who only sentences before was complaining that people have too many deeply held beliefs on this board?

This part is just dumb...

1) It's not even clear what you are trying to say. Try again.
2) It's not wrong to buy expensive gear...and gear is priced that way for a reason. If it were possible to get the same response from a $300 pair of monitors that you get from a $3,000 pair, then your point (or whatever you're trying to say) would make sense. Too bad it doesn't!

Well, I don't really like having things on my head that weren't there at birth. It's a necessary evil at times, but I try to keep my exposure to that at a minimum.

I do listen on my PC and cheap speakers. But mostly to get a feel for how the rest of the world is perceiving my stuff. And because when I had some studio monitors and things, I used them so rarely given that they were 225W EACH and this old trailer can't handle that. That I ultimately sold them since I wanted the cash more than the item. And the MSRP on the new version had dropped so much I was already looking at losing a sizable wad on the deal.

It's more than just a dream IMO. It's that my peeps deserve better (within limits). And that none of the cheap cheap stuff gets a result worth having IMO. Not that the not cheap stuff is worth the price in most cases. It's about having a goal and doing what is needed to get there. For me, it's one person, one trip, on gear less than the value of my car, to get results equal or better than some of the so called production houses that have otherwise screwed up recording me and my peeps in the past. As I still try to fathom that one. It's an outdoor event, you saw on the radar the hurricane (or remnants of), why you couldn't bring a ziplock bag to the gig, or some more pro-ish rain cape / underwater enclosure who knows? 5+ camera angles and the choice shot is the one with the big water droplet smack dab in the middle? Meanwhile ma and pa kettle who brought their $100 camcorder actually bothered to wipe the lens off when it needed it and got superior results.

What, Who .... Hey man! I was trying to sleep late today. You got the coffee on? And you better not be playing any of that stuff you recorded with that damn USB microphone. The quality is horrendous, Just do a simple A/B with a real recording set up compared to a USB into a computer.

That.

Some of us are here because music, recording etc is in our blood. Part of that passion manifests it's self into minutia that have little relevance in the real world.

Hmm.. I spent a shitload on some friking great speakers 'cause at one level it is that important. But then music from a crap clock radio works just as well doesn't it? :)

.. Why are you here then, just curiously now? :p:D

Why record with a $50 USB mic...when you can do it with a $2000 tube mic? ;)

Same reason people buy $30k-$40k-$50k cars...even though a $12k Hyundai gets them from point A-to-B the same way. :D

Religious beliefs aside...you only live once...or do you think there's high-end audio gear waiting for you in heaven...or......?

:)

Son, you're never going to make a quality album if you're listening to everything on tiny PC speakers.

Go to a music store and try all the mics, starting with the cheap USB mics and working your way up to the high end studio mics. There's more difference than just a brand name and clever marketing.
