Why record with a $50 USB mic...when you can do it with a $2000 tube mic? ;)

Same reason people buy $30k-$40k-$50k cars...even though a $12k Hyundai gets them from point A-to-B the same way. :D

Yeah, but if you drive the cars blindfolded, you can tell the difference. At least until you crash into something  Even then, those high-end cars are really safe in a wreck :D

Son, you're never going to make a quality album if you're listening to everything on tiny PC speakers.

If you've listened to any of the top 20 on studio monitors, you might feel differently. I played My Immortal on my Korg MR-1000 out my studio monitors (when I had them) and I spent the duration of the song checking all of the faucets to find the one that someone left on.

LOL@ 43 yo calling a 42 yo "son"!

Do you have an actual question Dan or are you just here for the conversation and philosophical roughage?

So I'm the only one that spends £1,000 on a pair of headphones then? And another £2,000 on the monitor controller to drive them?

Give me that kind of money and the family and I going around Europe for a couple of weeks !

Like hair :D
We black babies are rarely born with no hair. I was born with close to an afro ! When my wife was about to give birth, the midwife examining her said "We've got a really hairy one here..." and I thought 'what's your problem, wench ?'. Then we realized she meant the baby in the womb had a good head of hair ! And now I come to remember it, my cousin was born with a full head of dreadlocks.

philosophical roughage?
Sounds like the first year at University. Not that I'd know !

As crappy as current trends in pop music production may be, a self-respecting engineer wants to hear what's on the tape, rather than the plastic case of the speakers.

Yeah...but after two weeks the fun is over and the money is gone, but good gear keeps on giving over and over...... ;)

I haven't taken a "get away/resort" vacation since '93, which was the last destination ski trip I was on, out in Colorado.
During my heavy skiing years from '83 -'93 I did a handful of ski resort trips...but then, that's the period in my life where music/recording almost came to a complete halt...and oh yeah, a few years of being married from 86-89 didn't help any either! :D
"Are you going to be doing music all afternoon...what about spending time with me?!"

I recorded only a little bit during those years... :( ...but at least the skiing made up for it!

The wife is long gone, and I haven't done any skiing since 2004 (my right hip, lower back and knees just got torn up doing 5-day ski weeks)...so now I put all my "fun money" into the audio gear, instead of ski gear and trips.
When I'm "on vacation" these days...I'm usually spending a lot of it in the studio.

But I totally understand about the wife and the kids...if you got them, you have to include them in your life and make some sacrifices.

Ah yes, but memories and fun are important compnents in everyday life and besides, I'm a cheapskate !

It's very difficult to find a woman who understands that just because something isn't important to HER doesn't mean it isn't important. I got that kind of shit all the time as a freelance Web developer. For some reason, girlfriends think that if you're not leaving the house for 8 hours a day, you're not really working.

I've good good studio memories...and heck, I don't need the memories...the gear is still there! :D

;)

Hey...I really DO know where you are coming from. It's always a tough juggling act when you have other mouths to feed and be responsible for.
It just didn't go that way for me...for better or worse.
I never avoided it (even tried for it)...but here I am, still single (GFs don't count). :)

This kind of thread makes me so glad I am agnostic/atheistic...:D

I am in fact doing this later in the year... July, I thing. England / France / Italy. A month all up. I figure it's costing me about three decent guitars.... or two really, really good ones...

I think that there are a couple of points that the OP was trying to make.

The first is that sometimes we can be captivated by the technology instead of focussing on the music.

The second is that there seems little point in investing in high end gear to stuff that's only going to be listened to on low end gear.

I partly agree with the first point. To get value out of high end gear you need the whole system to be finely tuned. Buying, say, a high end pre-amp is not going to deliver much if the mike and the room aren't any good. It's a bit like putting a V8 in a car with dodgy suspension.

I don't agree with the second point. Music will sound acceptable on low end gear if it has has been recorded well. To record well you need reasonable gear at least.

I listen to everything you guys post on tiny crap speakers, and all of my stuff on decent monitors. That way My stuff always sounds better.

Remember .................. Jesus loves you ....................... but I'm his favorite.

I'll pop in on my way back home. It's nowhere near Texas, is it? Don't forget to bake a cake.

No, Texas is a different country. You'll find free ranging musicians there. Like the dreaded long horned Greg_L.
