Alan... the biggest fight me and the wife ever had was over the second daughter's name. The kid's name is Lizzy... my wife won the argument [golly gee... there's a shocker for you!!].

See the oldest kid's name is Sydney... and she would have gone through her life as Sydney. I think Nancy is a lovely name... and she would have gone through her life as Nancy... but the old man could have introduced the kids as "Syd & Nancy"... thinking I might derive some pleasure from this... she shot that idea in the head and left it to bleed out on the floor.

Yesterday Liz was my favorite... so far today Syd is my favorite... she said she was going to take the bus to school instead of having me drive her... of course this could change anytime with in the next hour... much like my favorite mic pre at any moment of the day.

Ok, I'm in.

Great River ME-1NV It's everything they rave about, detailed smooth. Neve-sh sounding. My mics snap to attention when I'm using it. I need more of these.

Focusrite Voicemaster Pro - upfront and smooth to gritty, very versatile. Has produced some excellent vocal tracks in its own right.

RNP - Emphasis is in the upper frequencies. Acoustic instruments are it's forte.

DMP3 - It's clean, it's accurate. Midrange focused. A little workhorse. Requires more limiting and compression than the ones above.

Soundcraft Live 8 channel board - really good, clean pres. Generally gets second duty for drum mics. Not as smooth sounding but compression makes it work.

Own/have owned;

Joe Meek VC3Q/VC6/VC6Q all had the SSM 2017 chip (RIP) and were pretty nice. The VC3Q was a bit anemic in gain IMHO.

Aphex 107 which has a relatively benign toob feature, and sort of said
"project studio" to me in terms of sound quality.

Bellari MP105 (still have) which sounds crappy, but eeldip has pointed out an
easy mod to make it much better for project studio type use.
Probably should sell it cheap to someone who wants to do this.

DBX 760X that never quite made it to Jim Williams to be modded.
I thought the Aphex was smoother in comparison to a stock 760X.
Sold at ebay a while back.

M-Audio Duo (has DMP2 pre's) bought primarily to learn about computer recording. Rate them a step above Mackie mixer XDR pre's, and better for
general use than the Aphex 107's mild coloration.

Next stop-planning to get the new Joe Meek 3Q soon.
Nice and clean sounding, and I miss a Meek compressor of some kind.
The 3Q is clearly better than the (stock) pre's on my list here IMHO.

GT Vipre..I love this one for its versitility..My favorite vox pre also Excellent DI
Great River MP1 NV x2..Great on Vocals, rock guitars,drums...Really works on everything very well..has plenty of charector..Very cool bass DI and cool for "thickening" up keys
Grace 101 x2..Clean sometimes to a fault also can be a little "hard/abrupt"..Good for acoustics w/ omni's and hand percussion ie fast transi. DI works well for keys like strings where you need clearity.. for the mud syndrome :)
Event EMP1..cool lil pre, clean{not quite Grace}.excellent for acoustic lops off the top just right..down side can be a little noisy..but at $150 used :)
OSA C's x2 / A's x1..These are really nice! They surprised me..very 3 dimentional and open and they still have some 'tude..I haven't used them long enough to find anything I dislike yet..Haven't used the DI's yet
ART MPA..Cheap can be crap if you not careful...But you can get reasonable results on elect guitars and the DI for some keys..To me this unit works well with a -10 setup where its lack of headroom is masked YMMV
Digitech VMP1...Regretable peice of shit.
Avalon U5 DI .Really nice,on the cleaner side of things..Works well on all that you DI

I shoot my load everytime I veiw this page...what I can afford is a different class of equipment.

Yamaha MLA7
SP VTB-1 with Mullard 12ax7

I read a review of the peq1 in Mix...it sounded pretty cool. Modeled after a pre from a custom made console for Zep in the 70s. The review wasn't as glowing as I thought it might be though, considering the price. Anyone actually used one?

John Paul Jones aparantly...Id look at Houses of the holy and after for a sample...maybe Fletcher has heard it.

I use the following for these purposes:

GR ME-1NV- main pre always first choice: for lead vox, bass, mono acc./guit amps, percussion, kick drum

Rane MS1b- snare top

dbx376- front kick NS10 speaker mic

mackie 1202vlz- 3 toms, high-hat

digi001- talk back mic/drum mach. click track

all into RME ADI-8Pro/Nuendo 8 I/0 ada's ...into ProTools LE (digi001)
