A question for people who have experience with a firepod

I was helping my school design a studio and they just bought a firepod. I want to try to convince them to let me use it over the summer. I know it comes with cubase. I would probably only use cubase to record into and then use acid to edit with because I like acid. The thing I need to know is if the cubase has a registration code or anything because if it does that might be a problem, because then they might not let me borrow the firepod. I would use acid to record into, but I am pretty sure it doesn't do multitrack recording. Also is there any freeware, shareware or really cheap software that does multitrack recording. Like I said before I will probably only use it for recording into and then transfer the files to acid. Any answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreiciated.

it has a usb dongle, that must be plugged into the usb port on the pc for the program to run...

usb? I thought it ran with firewire. Anyway I don't care the if softwear doesn't work without the firepod because I am only going to use it when I have to firepod.

I Think If you use the cubase cd that folows with the firepod, you should be allright, I have the same cd with my Emu 404, and I dident need a dongle for that.

I just bought the firepod as well seems like a real catch.

but really cant see any problems with using cubase LE, as no usb dongle follows with the firepod.

good luck

I dont think the cubase LE that comes with it has a serial ID that needs to be registered online to function. Simply install it on your computer, then when the school is using the firepod again, delete cubase off of your personal computer, so that you are not technically violating copyright laws by having 2 working copies on 2 separate computers.

Ok thanks. Now I have to convince them to let me borrow it.

i have a FIREPOD and have used Cubase LE some of the time and i think it sucks! you might try it with a copy of Audacity though as its a lot nicer for just a simple recording program that has no track limit since you will edit in acid another is Kristal but its not the worlds greatest and i only use it for mixing myself.. good luck on getting them to let you borrow the hottest selling firewire based recording interface out there :D

so you think cubase sucks just to record into? As long as it can record multitrack does it really matter?

No. Presonus apparently has a saved session up on their website thats preset to record all the inputs simultaneously.
I personally do not use nor like cubase, but it will record the tracks simultaneously as you are wanting.
I would not use it for anything further.

YMMV

I don't plan on using cubase any farther than that, but does it make a difference what program you record into?

not really, as long as it allows you to record all tracks at all supported bit depths and sample rates.
