Out of sheer morbid curiousity, how logical would it be, using an Insert cable, to hook to the ins and outs on an ADAT and plug into your board via the Insert I/O?

For clarity, to send the singal out of the board to the adat and into the board from the adat.

That would work pretty good. The insert send is pre EQ/fader so you go to tape flat (which in my not so humble opinion is a good thing). I had a mobile setup once upon a time witha Mackie 1604 VLZ and two ADATs and it worked nicely.

I too am interested about this inquiry...
I have a Mackie 1402VLZ and will be recording to adat...IS that really a logical means of hooking everything up???

Thanks!

The only (very, very, minor) flies in the ointment are that you have to have all the tracks armed in order to hear anything through the board and it makes it hard to insert compressors and gates.

With only 6 inserts, it would leave a bit to be desired, but would be workable from the sounds of it. If nothing else, run the 2 extra outs from the aux buses and the ins into the mono ins on the stereo tracks, assuming any of the stereo ins are mono-capable. To record all 8 at the same time anyway.

As a general rule, excluding the mic inputs, all of the inputs and outputs on a board will work for any line level signal you want to send out (or into) them. It takes a while to wrap your head around sometimes, but it opens up a world of routing possibilities and ways to jury-rig audio paths.

I second Track Rat's comment - we often record drums in the studio with a Mackie connected to an HD24 in the same way, via inserts. Works nicely for the reason that record levels are simply adjusted with the mixer trims and you're bypassing the less-than-desirable EQ.

With 'Auto Input' set, you can listen back to your recorded track immediately (without the need to record-disarm the track).

Only disadvantage is of course not being able to 'insert' compressors, etc., in the usual fashion, but I barely ever do that anyway.
