Today is my birthday (shameless birthday plug) and it's a big one - or so I've been told. I really have no feelings about it one way or the other, but everyone around me is acting like it's a big deal, so maybe it is? I don't know. So I wrote a stupid song about it. :listeningmusic:

A Punk Looks at 40.

Any critiques/comments on the mix are welcome and appreciated. :thumbs up:

Thanks,
Greg

A Punk Looks at 40

I'm an old guy in a young man's game
I probably come off really lame
I think my skills are still pretty high

I got nothing left to say
But I carry on anyway
I'm not about to shrivel up and die

And when the grim reaper comes reaping
I'll pretend that I'm sleeping
Hopefully he don't notice me

Oh no, oh no, here comes the big 4-0
I don't wanna go
Oh no, oh no, flush me down the toilet bowl
I don't wanna go

I'm still kicking out the jams
Doing it the best I can
I don't have to have a reason why

I just do what I wanna do
I probably do it better than you
I don't even really have to try

And when the grim reaper comes reaping
I'll pretend that I'm sleeping
Hopefully he don't notice me

Oh no, oh no, here comes the big 4-0
I don't wanna go
Oh no, oh no, flush me down the toilet bowl
I don't wanna go

Oh no!

Great song , love the guitars , your tone is one of my favs I hear on this site, no nits here .....happy birthday, your getting better with age!

I LOVE the surfesque guitar intro.

"And when the grim reaper comes reaping
I'll pretend that I'm sleeping
Hopefully he don't notice me"

Sheer genius. & a pre chorus or bridge to boot!

Solo - Link Wray would be proud - not sure about Dick Dake.

"Oh no, oh no, here comes the big 4-0
I don't wanna go
Oh no, oh no, flush me down the toilet bowl
I don't wanna go"

That's great but would've been more appropriate for yout turdieth birthday!

At 3.48 mins it's a long one for you but I assume you take advantage of the gravitas of the occasion to make this musical speech.

Greg,
Happy 40th. You don't sound it.
Terrific song, lot's of energy, lots of melody - cools solos, fun lyrics and the basic track, as always, is tight, taut and tremendous.
have a good one!

Love the guitars and energy as usual. The little guitar riff in the intro was cool sounding. Kind of a Ventures sound.

I actually heard a couple of pops. 2:24, 2:29, and 2:35.

But mostly it sounded great.

Nothing less than I expected when I first pressed play. Sounds great to me :thumbs up:

Great guitar tones, drums, everything. Songs that don't take themselves too seriously are always more fun to listen. Good work Greg :thumbs up:

*EDIT* Happy Bathday man! Have a good one! :thumbs up:

Happy Birthday.

Great tune....

Sounds very good....

But you already know that, because you don't even have to try!

Happy bday, Greg. :drunk:

I listened to your song. Boy, you sure have mellowed in your OLD age!

:D

Good job!

Thanks a lot Ray! :D

I used the new Hallmark guitar for a lot of this one. It's got that fat surfabilly kind of sound to it.

Damn you're right. There are some pops in it. I'll have to re-render. Thanks man. :)

It is nice not having to try. Thanks dude. :D

Thanks dude. I guess I am old now. I don't feel old, I don't think like an old person, but I suppose there's no denying it now. I'm making old look good! :D

Triple nipple sure can catch those clicks and pops huh? :D

Another greg masterpice ...... you're bad-ass man ..... even if you're 40 and trying to choose which Depends to wear!

Happy Birthday!

40 is loads better than 80, so enjoy your youth. Wonder if you'll still be shouting the same lyrics at 80. Hope so. Nice work old chap. :)

Haha, thanks Boob!

You know, my old computer clicks and pops with just about everything and I pay it no mind. I've never had it migrate into a track. I'll have to investigate further.

Thanks. If I'm lucid and physically able to rock when I'm 80, you can be sure I still will.

The title drew me in here...I thought you were going to punk up the Jimmy Buffett tune. :) Your production skills are damn good, old man. Did you buy yourself any new gear on your birthday?

Lucidity is overrated.
The purple spaghetti laughs at the crazy moon on tuesday.

lol @ 40.

I'll listen when I get to better speakers.
Cool, crank it. :D

Haha thanks seeker. I didn't even know about the Buffet song until fairly recently. There's a poster hanging in one of the bedrooms at the beach house we rent each year. It's a painting of a wrinkly old pirate staring off into the sunset and it says "A Pirate Looks at 40". I always thought it was weird and wondered who the fuck would come up with something so off the wall. Then I googled it and of course it's a gay ass Jimmy Buffet song. :laughings:

I got a few new things recently. You saw the new amp, I also got a new guitar and some mics and stuff.

Only 40? You're young for a punk. Axl Rose is 51, Johnny Rotton is 57, Tommy Ramone is 61 (it took me 5 attempts to even find a living Ramone!) Heck! Even Jimmy Urine is 43!

Sounds pretty good. I like the ska off-beats on the guit towards the end a lot!

Wow. Sure is a solid mix and tune, though epic by your standards. Gotta say the ska guit after 2.40 bummed me out a little. I was left with the "you're better than that" feeling I've seen you express when heatmiser did that song with the rap. Op Ivy was cool for their time but in this day and age ska gits bring back unpleasant memories of No Doubt...at least for me. Anyways, just brought it up because your stuff usually doesn't leave much room for criticism. So happy birthday man...for some reason I always thought you were a lot older. :D

Thanks VHS. Marky, Richie, and CJay are all ex-Ramones that are still alive. :D

Thanks. I'm not crazy about the "ska" bit either. It was an afterthought that I just threw in there because I've never put anything like that into one of my songs before. I was thinking, "can I even pull this off?" I don't hate it though. It's more of a nod to The Clash than anything else. I don't draw much inspiration from true reggae or ska, but I do love me some Clash. Op Ivy was okay. That one album "Energy" is pretty good. No Doubt is fucking gay, and if that little part reminds you of No Doubt, then that's on you, not me. No Doubt never enters my consciousness. :D :laughings:
