Fellow HomeRec members and guests,

This is a poll to determine how many of us use Pro Tools
software and Digidesign related equipment such as the
Digi001, DigiTools XP, the recent MIX/24 and DSP plug-ins
for Pro Tools as well as the host computer used, like
PentiumIII or P4, AMD Athlon/Thunderbird/Duron
or Mac G3 or G4.

There are Forums for CoolEdit Pro, n-Track and others
available at our HomeRecording site, and these have
and offer a wealth of practical everyday information
about these programs from those who use them.

While there are other sources for Pro Tools information
including Digidesign's own website and forums, I think that
among us, we do it a lot better- sharing information that
helps each of us improve the quality of our processes of
recording our own music, be it whatever it may- rock-n-roll,
country, gospel, trance or big band.

Thank you all for your participation in this. I am a Pro Tools LE
user, my system is a Mac G-4 with the Digi001. I learn something
new each day about it, and it's a really damn good system
for what I do.

Let's see if there are enough of us to constitute and justify a
Forum for Pro Tools...

Thanks!

I reckon there will be very few mate. Also just look a few posts down. We've already had a poll on thris topic.

Pro Tools is over-rated and overpriced. I wouldnt ever buy it unless I turned Pro. SONAR and Cubase etc are actually superior now for a lot of things.

I'm with you Faithmonster. I use Protools le/digi001 on a mac g4. The ease of use and intuitive nature of protools and other features make this a great package. Before I ordered Protools, I was all caught up in the "protools hating crew" also. I thought (and still think) that digidesign treats small home users like dirt. I let lots of "experts" tell me how the lack of smpte made PTLE worthless.

Well, after messing with cakewalk, vegas and a couple of others, I bought PTLE and I am very happy I did. Sounds great, easy as hell to use, and very widespread usage. The MTC sync allows me to dump tracks from my Korg d16 and Fostex d160. I'm not sure how you can say it is overpriced? I only paid $749 new for the software and the breakout box. Several hundred dollars less expensive than MOTU + digital performer.

Each to their own. Yes, I think there are some issues with protools LE, but I would hardly call it overrated or overpriced.

Protools LE offers the highest quality, most inputs, and greatest flexibility. I know someone (Professional Producer) who uses MOTU and he keeps getting digital artifacts. Most all in one recorders are permanently limited to 8 inputs and most at 16bit!
Granted that with Protools LE, you have to provide the computer, You can end up with 18track recording capability at 24 bit. All this AND the best editing and compatability qualities.

What I mean is that, no offence, you dont use "proper" Pro Tools for lack of a better phrase. U see the full Pro Tools systems are based on TDM technology which LE doesnt have. This is the PT equivalent of VST except that it is not entirely based in software like VST etc. You need to buy Pro Tools "DSP Farm" cards or cards like the TC power core. This makes PT VERY expensive compared to other packages.

Also for many of use to even use PT LE which I am sure is very good we would have to buy a new Mac to go with it. Most people here are PC users and PTLE doesnt even support Win 2k which is frankyl absurd as that is the most stable PC os (unless you wun Win XP Pro like me... hehe).

That is what I meant. But if you already have a Mac then a Digi 001 and PTLE might be a good buy.

Thanks for all the responses.

Markert and RSMITH123,

Thanks guys- for a while I thought I was out in thin air!
PTLE has been great for me. I went from a PIII system
running CoolEdit Pro (which I still admire) to my Mac.
It has been so much more stable- no more Blue Screen
crashes and meaningless prompts.

Alchemist3K, thank you for your views through this. I
admire anyone who can offer dissent on a subject while
at the same time being kind about it all- my hat's off to
you!

Once again, thanks everyone!

Markert,

I noticed that your location is Oklahoma. So is mine.
Real small world.

well, I never been to heaven...
but I've been to Oklahoma.
(Best place in the world to be. IMHO.)

I use PTLE / AM3, Mac G4 with dual screen. Love the software, love the hardware. I use it for live-cd editing. I have 32 track Tascam DA-88 in combination with tascam TMD8000. Stereo mastermix goes into AM3 and PTLE. When mixing live-cd's I use more than 2 tracks in PTLE for editing audience and transitions between songs. Normal 2 track mastering is done in Peak with Waves plugs. Protools rules.

the day that somebody makes a good vst wrapper for Protools that'll be the day. And of course a cheap firewire thing.

Besides my Digi 001, I also have an Audio Media III that I have in an older mac.

Cheers, Andrés

It had to do with the expression "ALL I HAD was Protools". I think it comes from that.

2 systems

What about those of us who use Pro Tools TDM on a Mac (MixPlus/5.1/G4 933) and Pro Tools LE on a PC (001/5.1/P3 867)?

There is a good free VST wrapper for the Mac, I dunno when they'll port it to windows. (http://www.netspace.org/~leigh/max/)

There's also an app that lets you steam up to 16 tracks from Reason into Pro Tools, and sync them together. (http://www.refusesoftware.com/)

It had to do with the expression "ALL I HAD was Protools"

That must mean I'm using Alsigot because I run PT Free on a PM8500 with a G3 daughtercard.

:D

I run Pro Tools LE with windows XP and it is super stable...

I can get a full 32 tracks recorded with 3 plugs per track...

the performance of Pro Tools LE on a PC simple destroys the performance on even the fastest dual G4 MAC's

(the only downfall of running PT le on a PC is limited plug-in support)

but the performance ROCKS

I have a Mac G4 Quicksilver; just upgraded the CPU to a 1.4 GHz; currently running PT LE 6.1.2 (I think) but am on the verge of upgrading to 6.9 as soon as I get some current projects finished up. For the interface I'm using a Digi 002R. The interface had a problem with the firewire output but Digi fixed it in lightning speed. I like the Protools interface alot; but then I haven't used other programs. It definitely suits my needs and has been stable as a rock. I'm set up to track up to 18 channels but to date haven't had a need to go beyond 14.

Does trying out the M Powered demo count?

I like the interface but I’ve got to say my first impression is not that good. The main reason is that it’s obviously a Mac application and that doesn’t work well for me at all being an XP user. Right mouse button commands in conjunction with keyboard commands are an effective way to work for me.

Other than that it looks like a good package. Excluding Digi hardware I think any of the good packages out there like Cubase, Logic, Sonar, DP, Saw Studio etc will run with it any day. I would not want to use it under XP but if I had a Mac I think I would be quite happy with it.
