Heres an acoustic tune with a bit of synthe mixed in that I'd like some comments/suggestions on. It was my first test of some of Ms Hilarious's MSH 10 mics, they seem so give great results-now if I can get the mix right is the next part.
No Time-re-retracked is the title-should be the top on soundclick.

I will listen tomarrow when I am home with my monitors Anfontan. :)

The guitar sounds pretty good to me...the drums are too loud in comparison. Bring them down some, so they don't distract from the guitar. Hard to tell about the vocals...they sit ok, but might need some taming if you bring the drums down a bit.

Are you happy with the mics? I'm thinking of getting some to mic my amp...they seem to have done well on the acoustic...it seems good.

Thanks Dog, I was pumping up the bass to give it a more upright bass feel and I was thinking that it needed a crisper high end-subtracting some low end will probably be the better way to deal with it. :)

Ok True, any feedback you may have will be appreciated.

To be honest and direct....the other mix that I have downloaded is the better of the two mixes...to me and my ears. So it is easier for me to comment on it.

I hope you don't mind me doing this.

The vocals in the first mix need to come up a bit...maybe a db at least?

The drums don't seem quite so overpowering in the first mix either, although bringing them down another db shouldn't hurt anything.

The guitars are clean and high pristine sounding setting good in the first mix, with both the right and left panned guitars having better volume.

Bass is subtle, but I think it is more present in the first mix.

The slide sits perfectly in the first mix, in my opinion and needs no tweaking whatsoever.

I like the volume of the Mandolin solo at 2:26 best and think if you brought the other mandolin solos up to the same volume as that solo, they would shine a bit more in the first mix.

That is just my opinion though. I love the song. The Lyrics hit home with me.

Great muscianship Tony.

Kudos :) :) :)

Now you can kill me. :D

It's really hard to comment on the mix with the drums being SOOOOO loud.
The vox need a boost the bass a cut & some defiinition. the synth a little drop. The guitar a bit of a general boost.
Nice song & recording generally - I like my MSH, it's a cool tool.

Hey Anfontan,

I like the mandolin playing and your acoustic guitar playing, they both need to be bought up in the mix in the early part of the tune, I like the levels you have at the 2:20 mark, they sit nicely on the levels for the solo!
I think the drums, particulary the high hat needs to be tamed somewhat so that it doesn't detract from your vocals which are great. You have a neat voice Tony, it reminds me of Van Morrison. The lyrics are well written as well Tony, well done!!
I think overall the mix just needs to have the guitar and mandolin bought up in the mix during the verses. Perhaps a slight boost in the low-mids and a tweak on the highs by a db or two for the guitar, the mandolin just a slight volume boost.!

Keep us tuned in on how your mix progresses Tony!

Thanx for sharing with us, I'm going for another listen!! :)

I'd love to hear this with a real drummer/percussion. Nice tune , great vocals and lyrics. As has been mentioned, the drums are too loud, and since it's a looping machine beat, it does get a bet distracting. Maybe don't have the constant open high hat. Besides that, the congas are perfect. Very nice, refreshing tune.

Thanks for the feedback RayC, Gorty, Rami, and True. Also thanks Nicole Rose for your comments too.
I've adjusted the level of the rhythm section and retracked the intro solo and hopefully they are changes for the better.
The next is called No Time re-mix and the old mix is still up for comparison. Again thank you all.

I gave this several listens....I would suggest a fade on the drum machine in the intro and try to bring it in a bit softer, the lead guitar, mandolin and slide parts...IMO....should have the same verb as the vocals...again this is just my opinion....otherwise a pretty cool tune that I can relate to....good stuff man!!!

To me the mandolin stands out in this as exceptional. Nice guitar sound. Maybe hit the vocal with a little compression since it’s kind of peaky in spots. I like the mandolin and dobro lines. I’d like to hear the mandolin doing licks backing the vocal all through the tune.

Whats that Beach Boys' ''Kokomo'' sounding snare? Its quite high up, I'm not a huge fan. Could you use a Conga or something or maybe a Cabasa?

I loved the Dobro intro, it was awesome and at the bridge bit around 2.20 too. I think the mandolin right after is a bit high too in the mix, I could be wrong.

I really like your vocal style, it's like The Eagles mixed with John Martyn. And it sits real well with the synths too, those rock!!

The guitar is awesome, go Martins!! Do you think you could do some extreme panning with regards the other stringed stuff? Like have the madolin come out of one side in response to the dobro?

Keep in mind I am woeful at mixing...you may want to ignore everything I say. As a song I think its awesome.

Hey, hey keep missing many songs you post. Sorry man!

Back to the song. :)

This song sounds real nice to listen to. Very mellow.

The Vox sure could use a little wetness (either verb or delay like Tim suggested).

The gutiars and the banjos are nice touch and done nicely.

The open hats are a little too upfront and a little too dry also. I'd recommend to lower them by 5db and then add some verb or something. Slight verb.

Nice words.

I listened to the remix, and enjoyed it very much... Your voice sounds familiar but darned if I can name the artist. I'll try and get back to you on that....
The vocals could use bit of treatment (as I quoted Tim above). I did find the solo parts and vocal lines outstanding - inspiring to say the least. Great Job and Great Song.....

:) :D :) :D

Thanks to all for the listen and the comments/suggestions!

JPW23-Maybe some compression on the drum machine, most of the string instruments are dry, the mandolin was dry so it jumped out of the mix on its appearances-I'll try some effects to see how it goes.

Tim-You're words are a great compliment-as the guitar playing I've heard of yours is always amazing! For sure my vocal needs the compression-I'll try that very soon.

TelePaul-The drum is supposed to be a conga, there is a high hat sound in there I need to adjust and give the sound some variation, and like others have said-some compression to tame it a bit as well.

BigBubba-I really don't post too often, so you haven't missed much-most of my stuff is from about 10 years ago and I'm trying to use new technology to help them out. The mandolin really was the motivation for the song-everything else kind of fell in place from there.

Ido1957-Like Tim said the peaky vocals need some smoothing with compression-the solo parts were more or less stripped to rather basic stuff-I play with a bluegrass/folk acoustic band where I have to play lines with the fiddler and those are always much more complex than the parts I played here.

APL-Yes Arvo, the MSH mics definitely motivated me to redo these tracks, those little mics are amazing-and they are cute as can be too! LOL!!

And thanks for the compliments on the lyrics, seems like most people that are past~oh well~hmm~past their 20's can relate to them...I think TelePaul can relate too-hes a very mature young man!!

Bahahahahahhahaha! Tony, you crack me up! Let us know if you post a re-mix.

Hey, just listened to this. Your dobro playing is great - really precise, whch is something I find difficult to do. Love the mandolin too. Good songwriting also.

I think everyone has already mentioned all that needs to be said with regard to the drums - it's unusual that you chose use loops considering that the rest of your sound is so organic, but hey, sometimes what is convenient is also best, right? As a template to work over, they're fine; you can always replace them with the real thing when you get a chance or when you feel like it.

While I was on your site, I checked out Panhandle Rag and Love Hurtz also. Wow, I could listen to that stuff all day - really great sound.

I love the way the guitars sound.

I would have something done about the drums If I was you the Hi-hat (cymbal) thing sounds very weird in my monitors kinda way to strong almost peaking.

It sorta takes the focus away from the beauty of this tune.

besides from that Issue I think this is just great, love the way you vary the instruments.

Top notch :)
