Pleezzzze don't laugh too hard at this question; I'm an idiot with MIDI, and just needing some laymens explaining, for my simple mind. Here it goes..... I have a Roland MC-505 for a MIDI based instrument, recording into a Roland/Edirol U-8 8-track digital studio, which is also my MIDI interface, which in turn is hooked via USB to my Computer. The PC is running Cakewalk Sonar 2.2, for the curious. As opposed to wanting my soft-sequencer to control the functions of the 505 (thus, making it the "SLAVE", if i'm correct...), I want to do the opposite, and take full advantage of some of the MIDI-based sound canvasing software on my Comp, using the Roland MC-505 as the delegator, and , I guess, the prog as the "SLAVE."
Please, any help for this simpleton would be appreciated --- what settings should I use between Groovebox and PC, to get the desired affect.
Thanks to any and all who respond....

I don't have sonar in front of me, but it should have a setting under the MIDI configuration to set up the master clock. You can set this to external. Check the manual for the details; what you're looking for, though, is setting the MIDI clock to external.

I would assume the 8-track would also have a setting like that, though I've not worked with one.
I'm wondering why you'd want to do things the way you are; why not just do it all in Sonar? Seems like you're wanting to sequence from the least intuitive and flexible (from a MIDI standpoint) piece of gear in your arsenal. Just my opinion.

I'm guessing I'm under the misassumption that by doing what I propose, that I can -- shall we say -- expand the selection of "Virtual" patches and rhythms available to me, via the instruments available in a MIDI program....
Like I said, I am a MIDI moron.... :o
Thank you for your prompt response, and for not lambasting me too much. LOL. I'll try and give SONAR MIDI a standalone whirl, as you suggested, and see how I fare.
Laterz....
