A mic that sounds like the Shure SM81 but cheaper?

I was wondering if anyone knows how much different the MXL-1006 is from the MXL-V67G? Only reason is because if I want a shock mount, I have to get the MXL-V67G w/ shock mount and Mogami cable for package total $150...which puts me $50 over the budget. (The matched MXL-603s are $200)
I could get the MXL-1006 w/ shock mount for $100. Is there any difference in the mics? The specs look almost identical on the website.
Thanks for advice,
Jed

Yet another choice

...for a LCD mic would be the MXL V93M, The Mars version of the MXL 2003. I don't have a 67, but I luv my 93. I've seen them for $99, 2/3 of the sale price I paid, and half the "original" retail price. It comes with the mount and a -10 pad, very nice to have. I don't know that the 67 has one.

Ok, thanks for the heads up and everything. The reason I was looking at the Alesis 24 is that it has direct outs for all 8 preamps, and seemed to have pretty decent specs. Of course, I've never used one, so....I don't really know for sure.

What used/older (so I can get it on Ebay) Mackie or Soundcraft (heard they have good preamps) mixers have direct outs?

I think I will be happy with those mics, especially for the cost, when it's all said and done.
Thanks,
Jed

Oh Yeah, the MXLV67 and MXL603S are nice mic's. I have a Mackie 32x8 bus and Allen & Heath mixer, but I want a Soundcraft Ghost.

The MXL V93M is $199 at MF, and the MXL 2003 is $150 at ZZounds. So I'll probably just (over budge again!:)) get the MXL V67G w/ shock mount & Mogami cable for $150. Wish it came with a case like the 603s kit does, though. Oh well. For that price I guess I shouldn't complain. :)

Thanks for the help, guys. About that Alesis mixer -- if the auction goes through, I'll have to get it. If someone out-bids me, I'll look for a Soundcraft or Mackie...but I have yet to find a 16ch. mixer with direct outs in the price range I bid on that Alesis....

Jedman, there are many 'budget-mixers' with direct outs that are better than the Alesis desk.

Here's a start
-Spirit Folio SX (12 mic pre's w/inserts, 8 direct outs, 3 band EQ w/ midsweep, 100mm faders, 3 auxes,4 stereo channels, 2 subgroups). Around $300.

-Soundcraft Spirit M8 (8 Ghost-mic pre's w/inserts, 8 direct outs, 4 stereo channels, 4 returns, 4 auxes, 3 band EQ w/midsweep). Around $550-600.

-Allen & Heath Mixwizard 14:4:2 (10 mic pre's w/inserts, individual phantompower, direct outs), 6 auxes(!), 4-band EQ with 2x midsweep (!!), EQ-bypass button per channel (!!!), 4 subgroups, etc,) around $1000. But this is one of the most feature-laden small desks.

And then it's upward to Soundtracs Topaz Project 8 & Soundcraft Ghost.

Speeddemon - that was exactly what I was trying to find out! Thanks. There's quite a range there. Well, the bid I have is $175 on the Alesis Studio 24, and if it goes, it goes... if not, I'll look for the Soundcraft, because I've heard really good things about their pres. I really am way over budget already, but I seem to keep getting the "next best thing" and it's draining the coffers! :)

Thanks again,
Jed

Just a little update for all those who've helped me on this one:
I just orderd the matched stereo pair of MXL-603s, and the MXL-V67G w/ shock mnt and mogami cable package deal. Wow...talk about draining the reserves! :) For better or worse, I got the Alesis Studio 24 on Ebay - the price was right, and guy claims it's all in great condition, etc. We'll hope for the best. I've read both pro and con reviews on it, so I'm drawing my straw. ;)

Thank you to all who helped. Hopefully in the months to come I'll have recordings to post in the MP3 forum!

P.S. If Alfalfa is out there, I now have the Alesis RA-500 studio amp driving those JBLs, and it is a world above that Pioneer A/V reciever I had bought. Thanks for talking me out of that one!

I guess my only question would be, why do you want a microphone that sounds like a SM-81. There are many SD condensers which are great, and some of them are cheaper than the SM-81. I, for one, never use SM-81s if I can help it.

Too bad.
You're missing out on a great mike.

Welcome to the club! :D

Light, they just liked the sound of the Shure SM81 but couldn't afford the SM81's, and thats why they were looking for a mic that sounds like a SM81 but cost less. Anyway, they ended up ordering two Marshall MXL603S's instead of the SM81's. The 603S's don't sound like SM81's but, the 603S's sound good and should work well for them.

I have probably used this mic more than most (though certainly not all) of the posters on this board. I am not fond of it, but that is me. You can of course use whatever you want.

Yeah, DJL had it right ... I liked a piano recording that was posted here and it was done with the SM81. I couldn't afford two of those, though, so I was looking for help finding some good piano recording mics.
After all the advice and stuff, I decided on a matched set of MXL-603s w/ shock mounts and case for $200.

I'm hoping for the best! :)

my two cents

Howdy!
I want SM 81's as well, but I will probably wait on a review or feedback (no pun intended) ont the Studio Projects C4's before I buy used 81's
