A Little Recording For Yall To Listen To

Alright, in hope that everyone settles-down, I thought I'd post a little something I've been working-on. It's by NO means a final mix; just a quick 1 hour rough mix to get an idea.

It was tracked to a Tascam TSR-8 and Alesis ADAT-XT synced together for a total of 14-tracks; all of which were used. It was mixed on a Mackie 1604 VLZPRO to a PC through a Lynx One sound card @ 48k, 24-bits, running WaveLab 3.0 where it was VERY quickly edited, mastered, and put into MP3 format.

Again, this is a VERY rough mix. The lead vocals are too low in my opinion (wasn't my decision) and the back-up vocals were too loud at the end. The "telephone effect" went over-board in my opinion, ESPECIALLY at the end. In fact, I think the FX input for it overloarded. Again, doesn't matter, just a rough mix.

why did'nt you tell me that you got a vmp2?. That preamp funks.

The track funks.Quite smooth. Sounds like you were using some outboard fx, not the cheesy plugins of nowadays.

I think the kick could use some work on the final mix

So which do you prefer, the vmp2 with new tubes or the davisound?

It sounded good on my airline quality headphones plugged into my crappy work laptop. Nice job.

Yeah... I was getting that message too. After a several tries over about 20 minutes, it is working again... hmmm... I guess you just have to get it on a good minute.

Yeah, had the VMP-2 here for about a year. Beautiful heavy preamp with quite a heavy sound. The tube changes kept the great "warmth" it has stock but they extended the top-end a bit and added a "musical-sweetness" to the top-end as well.

As compared to the DaviSound TB-3, it's on the opposite end of the spectrum. The simple fact that the VMP-2 had input & Output transformers and the TB-3 being active-balanced is a BIG enough difference. BUT, what REALLY sets them apart is the speed of the TB-3 preamp AS WELL as it's optical compressor. We're talking drum-accurate speed here! Where with the VMP-2, it's slow and mooshy on drums (absolutely NOT a "bad" thing, simply different).

But one thing should be mentioned; the VMP-2 has been gone for a bit of time now. I got rid of it along with a Behringer T1953 with Mullard CV4004 tubes simply because I didn't use them often enough to justify me keeping them around. It's just for the most part, when dealing with clients, you don't have time to "play"; it's set "Lets set-up and roll". And in those situations, you grab the tried and true with quick set-up time and something with headroom for days; because I DON'T want to be caught saying to myself "That's nasty! Is that preamp input distortion?!" on those "Once in a lifetime takes".

The VMP-2 I always felt I had to play with it for awhile to be satisfied. Of course, when that occurs, it's WELL worth-it and I COULDN'T be ore pleased! BUT, it pretty much has to something I'm doing on my own time or during a repeat client who is more easy-going with "eperimenting". I feel the same way with my DaviSound TB-1. OK, I didn't get rid of it, but the custom aspect of it makes it FAR more hard to. Regardless, I'll NEVER let it go!!!

Though, it SHOULD be noted that I WOULDN'T be too surprised that if the opportunity arose to buy another sometime down the line, I'd jump on it; at the right time, money-wise! THAT I believe says enough!

And yeah, this does belong in the Clinic (maybe I'll take it there), but this really was something to advert some of the attention off that great thread that's going... See how wonderful it worked? :rolleyes:

So now what's a good free server for MP3s now days without new files being under "review" for days and able to post publicly rather than send an "e-mail invitation"? It seems everyone I try sucks!

Whatyoutalkinboutrough!? Sounds great! Crystal clear. And with pop I guess that's a good thing. Vocals could use more volume as you said. And also as said before more kick. It's hard for me to judge as a non fan of pop music-"Where the musician is the engineer".
 
nice clear sound...and good singing. I'm not too crazy about the cheezy midi gtr...especially starting out the song. Some very creative synth "ear candy" going on...and nice stereo spread.
