A little mic to mic test: Neuman TLM103 and SP-C1

I guess the published specs and freq. curves published by manufacturers can be misleading at times . . . for if you go by that alone, then the 2003 is pretty much flat as a board up to around 20K, where there is just a bit of a sloap on up to 23K for God only knows what reason. :)

From tests I've seen comparing the two, the TLM and the 2003 are nearly identical in their freq. patterns.

The V67, on the other hand, has an interesting curve to say the least, with a few strategically-placed bumps and potholes.

That's so you'll have something to record up there with your 96khz system.

Hi Chessrock-

Yeah, I've never found that advertised response curves to be too reflective of sonic reality when it comes to cross-manufacturer comparisons. Maybe they show trends within a particular company's product lines (assuming consistent measurement methodology between products).

On the other hand, if you are aware of independent testing of the 103 vs the Marshalls, I'd be very curious to see that (of course given that the testing were done consistently and displayed using the same resolution bandwidth, etc.) URL's would be appreciated....

Alan

Marshall mxl 2003: Nothing captures the high-end detail of critical dog-whistle recordings better.

Chessrock-

Thanks. Yeah, I've seen this page. The common structure of the dips and wiggles between the two mics makes me think that they are calibration artifacts. It would be awfully coincidental for both mics to show such identical structure. (Like the big dip at ~4.2K!, also at 1K) The resolution bandwidth looks pretty fine, but is not specified.

Given that the same calibration was applied to both mics, perhaps something can be inferred about the DIFFERENCE between the two. (It would be nice to subtract the two curves!) So maybe the 2003 has a small narrow peak at 4K, and unfortunately the displayed bandwidth stops at 6K, which ignores much (most?) of the timbral information that we've been discussing here, but is fine for a HAM radio setup.

regards,
Alan
