when i saw over at the mic forum that you had a new song i wanted to hear more masterful picking and out-of-breath dave matthews vocals!

this kinda sucks.

when he's scream/groaning "breathe on me" it sounds like he's been constipated and is in the middle of a painful elimination.

its just about as pleasant to listen to.

the other thing that jumped out was THUMP! THA-THUMP!

i think its too much impact and up too high in the mix.

the woodblock sound is fine and fits well.

if you yourself had done this i think the guitar playing would be 100% better and the singing would be 99% better.

this guy needs you to play for him and he needs to sing every day for two hours along with prerecorded vocal warmups and lessons. in a year or two he might sound great! he's got potential i think. he needs to loosen up and relax and be confident and really sing.

hope this wasnt too honest for you and i hope you do more of your own!

on the other hand its great experience to record others and you shouldnt let this slow you down at all!

do as much of this as you can cause its fun and educational!

414CE... yeah.. it's too bright for some things.. but it's still sweet...

and yes... I have been accused, in the past, of using profuse amounts of smileys... but that's ok... it conveys my personality quite accurately... "profuse" :p oh.. wait.. I mean.. "smiley". :)

Mix... whenever I use verbs, it just tends to widen the sound out more, and make it take up even more space. I still don't understand how they get each instrument to sit in its own "space". I mean... even when I hard pan stuff, it's almost as if it's still takin' up too much space... maybe I just need to buy more gear.... yeah... that's it... :p

P.S. Chris... I put up the last mix of this dumb tune.. :p I raised the vox so much that even your deeef self should be able to hear it... :D

since ive been coming to the forums ive found links to great articles on how to do all this stuff.

what i found for reverb and what i use now is:

- i put a "room" reverb on EVERYTHING going in with a behringer virtualizer effects unit. patch #18.

- i pick a hall patch depending on the feel of the tune small medium or large and put an average of 33% on everything. for distant sounds more and for close sounds less. i go from about 10% to 66% or so. something like a woodblock gets maximum. bass doesnt get as much!

- drums, solo instruments, and vocals, and whatever else it sounds good on get a single delay at 30 to 90 milliseconds at 100% and with a little high cut.

this is just the basic formula i found. the room reverb gives "early reflections and thickens. the big reverb gives big room sound. the delay makes certain things thicker.

im not trying to seem like an expert cause im a rank amateuer struggling myself... im just passing it on!

may god bless all your endeavors!

he ... he .... ye what jeap said ... in his first post ... :D

one thing though did you wanted the acc gtr in the middle of the mix ? and it still sounds ... not good ... :D ... in this day and age of nice guitars everywhere there is just no excuse for that sound IMHO ... :D

Hello, I have a question.

First, I heard the song, and like it, has a lot of potential. I think the idea of rolling the low end on the vocal will be good. I don't know if the drums are real or not but they sound excellent, can you tell about the drums? real? gear? Thanks, keep the good work, I'm downloading your other songs now... :)

The drums were studio recorded loops... so it goes without saying that they would be the best part of the song... :p

I was considering re-recording this myself and doing all the parts... but some of the vocal parts are way too high for me... I would sound worse then him if I tried to do 'em... so forget that.. :p I'll just go back to recording my own stuff... :p

By the by,.. I actually put two EQ's on the Vocal channel and look all the lower frequencies down as far as the faders would let me.. and it still sounds like that... there's nothing I can do to fix that vocal sound,.. it was just bad mic positioning.

I did some preliminary testing with my DMP3 and C-1... I found that if I use the Low Cut on the DMP3 and the Low Cut on the C-1, my vocal sound is actually pretty decent.. so I'll prolly be doing that from now on.

do you have any room treatment?

it sounds from your description like the prob may be standing waves? there shouldnt be any need for drastic EQ.

i just put up a blanket in a peculiar arrangement on my ceiling. im hoping it will act as something of a cheap easy bass trap.

convoluted foam mattress pads are like 4 bucks at wal mart and look a lot like studio foam.

put something in all your corners so you dont have 90 degree angles.

javo is such a cool prsn! listen to my crap please javo!

:)

lol... "room treatment"!?!?!?

not quite... :p

My "studio" is basically a corner of my bedroom. To the left of me is a wall with a window on it (through which the sound of noisy children routinely bleeds... ) and directly behind me is my bed. It's a pretty big room actually,.. to my right is a bunch of empty space before you get to the door... there's aboot 12-15 ft between me and the door. So, I know when I get a better recording location I'll be happier with my sound... but right now I'm not too hip on it... I just finished some extensive testing with different mics and positioning and never ended up finding a sound that I'm happy with. :( I prolly won't be doin' much more until I can figure oat how to get a good sound.

I liked it,thought it was good for your first shot!
The melody and tune were real good, and the guy definatly has a good voice.

Sounds like he's just too close to the mic on the quiet parts, when he let loose he backed up,right?
Sounds like he overloaded the mic.
He sounds great on the louder parts.

Mabey you should double the acoustic and pan it stereo, give more room for the vocal?IMHOP

I think the sound your getting isn't too bad at all, just needs some tweaking.
Iv'e had my new setup for a year, and still do nothing but mostly experiment, trying to get a good sound.
I'm getting closer though!
Mabey in another ten years I'll get something that I think sounds halfway decent! :D

Ive not yet heard a man wisper while singing that sounded great, not on any level so dont feel bad, If thats a taylor Im not very impressed (Ive been using a yamaha cpx15 and it is my favorite so far). the pre is ok but Ive allways considered my Yamaha MLA7 to be like an 8channel version of that but I consistantly get better results with it.

I could hear the room slightly but not to bad. I try to keep mine dead you should consider a dedicated room with sound treatments. Good effort but if you used studio monitors the vocal should have sounded boomy to you. I used ns10s to listen to this and that was my impression.

yes... that is most certainly NOT my Taylor... :p

I dunno.. I'm gonna mess more with the sound later... maybe I'm just tired of it... maybe I'm just suffering from a brief bout of "gear lust" :p.. who knows...

I'm real late to this one.............sorry.....way too much deep lows on the vocals....in addition to the lows you already pulled out on the vocals.......try pulling down between 400-500....somewhere in that range...I bet it cleans up the vocals some.
Nice tune.....the guitar sounds fairly decent......pretty cool.....i want to hear it with the vox tweaked a bit more...
