Well here goes.I've beenplaying guitar for about 5 years and would like to do some recording, nothing serious, just to capture what I sound like on a good day{few and far between though they are}.I've gone ahead as usual and jumped half as*ed into the process.I bought a Tascam Porta02mkII 4 track recorder. After reading the manual there are a few questions I hope someone can help me out with.First,I have a Peavey Classic 30 amp and according to the Tascam manual to record directly from the amp to the Tascam to use"line out,pre out or direct out".As far as I can see the amp has none of these outputs. It does have "EFX out",would this work? Can I record directly from the guitar to the Tascam bypassing the amp?Or should I just "mic" the amp?Secondly, also according to the Tascam manual I need a "stereo master recorder"{to produce the stereo recording},an amplifier and speakers for monitoring.Do I need this,or can I get buy with my mini shelf stereo system to make the master? As you can tell I AM a newbie at this recording stuff so please for give the dimwitted questions.Hope someone can help me out.
Thanks and take care

You'll be way better off putting a mic in front of the amp. Most direct outs on guitar amps sound pretty lame.
As far as mixing down goes, yes you can hook it to your home stereo if that's all you have (I'm assuming there's a cassette recorder associated with it).

Get yer'self a big audio recording upgrade. NJ pickup deal only!

Here's the Tascam 388, Studio 8, the king of "Portastudio" designs, by the people who invented the Portastudio, Tascam.

The 388 has an awesome 8x8x2 mixer, records 8 tracks onto 7" reels of 1/4" tape, with dbx, at 7.5ips, for a full functioned 8 track hifi audio recording experience.

This particular 388, being a NJ pickup deal only, will probably bid very low, comparable to the new price of the new 424mkIII. It doesn't get any better than the 388, in Portastudios, although at 87lbs, Tascam wouldn't dare call it "Porta-".

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, looks like I'll be buying a mic.My home stereo does have a cassette deck.I know this is not the best thing to be using to make the stereo master,so can you recommend some cassette decks/amps{i.e. brand, model, ect} that would suit my needs?Nothing extravagent 'cause I am on a budget{er....my wife says I'm on a budget}.Thanks again for the help.

If you have a computer and a half way decent sound card, get some software and mix into the computer. It'll sound WAY better than just about any cassette (except maybe something like a Nakamichi). A CD burner can be had for the computer for relatively cheap.

Track Rat is right again! :D

A Nakamichi 582 is a cassette deck that sound better than most consumer reel to reel tapemachines, CD burners and DAT machines.
