A Guide for New Guitarist.

Friends,

Please consider my opinion of guitar dimensions. These things are not widely discussed among guitar players. The manufacturers and luthiers know about these things and I feel that it is important to also inform the player who will own the guitar. If a guitar player knows that he does not like a fat neck profile, he can be steered clear of any guitars that have a fat neck profile. Do you see my reasoning friends?

First rule: play a guitar before you buy it. And right there, bigredhappyhotdogboy's guide is shown to be worthless

This is true and I agree it's one of the most important things. Almost as important as taking a decent player along with you so he can play it for you. I've suggested this in the past and I think it goes for good players too.

You hear a completely different guitar out front than you do sitting behind it. The first thing I do when I string up a new instrument off the bench is get a friend round so I can asses it in his hands.

This is something that as a maker you learn pretty quick because you play the thing constantly as you finishing off and setting up. Only when you hand it over do you really get to hear what it sounds like. Particularly relevant to acoustics and archtops but still true of solid bodies. You hear so much more when someone else is playing.

JTC111,

Do you know that most cheap guitars are not as wide at the nut as are expensive guitars? Why do you think this is true? I would like to hear your opinion? I could be wrong and I don't mind if I am. I am here to share with my friends. I think you are very suspicious of me. I do not know why. I hope we can be good friends and share information. The internet was created to share information but so many people forget why it is here.

Not really I'm afraid. Guitar makers big and small make guitars to sell and make them as good as they can in that price range. It makes absolutely no difference in terms of building to make a "c" or "d" profile or a 44mm nut or a 46mm nut. We make what we have been asked to make and if we are doing it blind we make what we know is popular or likely to sell.

These things are discussed quite freely by luthiers manufacturers and players alike. Some like on thing some like another there is no right or wrong as long as the thing makes a noise, stays in tune and holds up to the demands of being played. That applies to cheap or handmade instruments.

I'm afraid you have a completely wrong opinion on how we do things. If a customer wants advice on guitar dimensions or geometry we are quite happy to tell it like it is.

You are talking rubbish. Go measure a PRS custom and find me a narrower nut. Just one example I could quote you many many others. I have made decent instruments with narrow nuts and decent ones with wide nuts. It is entirely down to the player.

Either start doing some proper research or shut up. The choice once again is yours.

Hello muttley600,

I hope you find peace in your life as well as JTC111. I know there are exceptions to all the rules. I am speaking of the majorities. The two most popular electric guitars in the world are made by Gibson and Fender. Please look at there specifications for nut width and compare to the chinese and mexican made models. Also look at the very popular Martin guitars. It is true! Compare the dimensions of popular cheap guitars that are copied from the Gibson and Fender guitars. I have nothing to gain by sharing this information. Manufacturers do deviate from the dimensions of their flagship guitars when making cheap guitars. There are exceptions.

hmmmm ...... I don't know Muttley ....... I mean, well ..... I can see where going out front and hearing an acoustic might be pretty useful because that's the only way to see how an acoustic projects ..... but with an electric I can stand at the end of a 30 foot cord and get a pretty good idea of how it's gonna sound ....... and with electric, ..... HOW you play really affects what comes out ..... no one else really plays quite like me so I'm not so sure that for electrics it would tell me a lot ...................... still, last week when a friend came by and grabbed my git I got to go out front and it was VERY useful to be able to tweak the tone without thinking about playing ................ ah HELL!!! ...... you're right again!!

Well unlike some of the trolls and wind up posts that are abounding here of late I try and only post when I'm fairly sure I have,

....a grip on reality,.....a solid understanding of the subject matter,....a brain,...;)

Like you I find it very useful to hear the balance and dynamic of the guitar out front, especially those gigs where I insist that the sound man doesn't touch anything once I'm set. I often find it helps to strap their hands up with gaffa tape until they get what I'm on about. Only then do I relent. Maybe we could get this hot dog fella to put some over his keybord.:D

Just go away now we've all had our fun with you and you've had yours so lets leave it at that shall we.

Hello friends,

What did I do to make you want me to leave. I don't understand. I'm only sharing information with my friends. So far I have been called names and insulted for no apparent reasons. Is this the type of behavior that the truth arouses? I hope that we can all get along and write a good article about buying guitars.

Hello mikemorgan,

I looked up the definition of an internet troll. It is here.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll

This does describe some HomeRecording members that I have talked to so far. It does not describe me. I do not look to start agruments. I only try to share with my friends and be honest.

I'm glad this kid's having some fun at our expense: I just wish innocent n00bz weren't likely confused in the process...

Hello muttley600,

I would appreciate better manners from my friends. I have done nothing to deserve such bad treatment. I forgive you. All is well and I hope you find peace in your life. We should all be good to each other.

Hello friends,

I want to share some information with you about woods that I found. Here it is.

http://www.jemsite.com/jem/wood.htm

In my experience this is a good guide to the most common guitar woods. I hope you enjoy this information.
