hi,
is there a way to be able to hear what you are recording while you are recording it, for instance hearing your voice in the headphones as you sing the vocal, the way you can on a Tascam 4-Track or such. We have no other problems recording, everything works perfectly, we just always have to have one headphone ear off while we record, and if we are doing keyboard or such direct, we can't hear it. I'm just using n-track on my inspiron 5100, i'm not sure if there's some kind of setting that can change this or not, but if anyone knows it would be greatly greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Try clicking that green circle on the recording meters. If you can't see the recording meters push F4, or F5, or F6, I know one of those is the recording meters.

There may be other factors invloved though.

Well .... depending on the input you are using ... Line In or Mic In ....
Best to use the Line In by the way.
Double click the little speaker down by the clock .... This will bring up the Playback controls (or in n-Track, do the keyboard short-cut Ctrl+F3) .... Make sure that the input you are using isn't muted and adjust the fader for that input to a comfortable listening level.

Some more details would be appreciated! How are you connecting your mic to your soundcard? If you get a real recording interface such as the Delta 44, you could plug your pre outputs into one of the inputs and then route that input directly to an output, which can then go into a mixer/headphone amp. OR you could use Delta's Monitor mixer, which would allow you to send any inputs (and/or output from N-Track) to the outputs, which again would go to a mixer or headphone amp.

I have my Pres go directly into 2 inputs on my Delta box, and then I use their "Monitor Mixer" feature to decide what gets sent to my two main outputs, which go to a stereo channel on my Mackie mixer. I can listen to what I'm tracking, while I'm tracking, as well as what I've already recorded. It is possible!

This is almost always configured in your sound card's mixer. Just make sure you have your levels set correctly. You may have the record level turned up, but the monitor level turned down.

thanks everyone for the info so far, but i'm still not sure. i don't have a special setup, just recording through the mic in the mic input, but i'm wondering, should i be able to hear myself recording as i am recording? is anyone able to, without the Delta 44, as mentioned above? I couldn't find any info on whether I'm setup with Mic-In or Line-In. Crankz1, could you help me further on that? and i'm not really sure of my soundcard properties. i went through it and couldn't really find anything. Hopefully this explains enough, I'm not too sure, if you have any more help I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

go to audiominds.com, there is a section there on configuring the sound card and all, and you really need to ues the line in not the mic in....
