Yeah, Lent needs a modern rework. Who eats meat seven days a week anymore  I don't hardly ever eat red meat and I don't like chicken enough to mind going without. Literal physical mortification would be having to eat a Porterhouse every Friday, that would get me to see Jesus within a year

:D Lenten promises are not to do with fish or meat. Fish on Fridays was 52 weeks a year. Nothing to do with Lent. Lent was/is to do with fasting and abstinence. I don't hold with it myself but I'm a progressive Catholic in so far as I think they need to re think many things about Catholicism starting with everything.:D

I can't go a week without steak.People who don't eat red meat don't live longer,it just seems that way.

Ribeyes tomorrow.......

Most American Catholics have long forgotten that some act of mortification is required every Friday; doesn't have to be abstinence from meat but that's easiest for me to remember. Abstinence being mandatory during Fridays of Lent (and Ash Wednesday) I don't follow your comment about meat.

The Lenten practices of fasting, abstinence, and almsgiving are absolutely right; conserves resources, aids health, puts one in solidarity with the poor who are then directly aided by the alms. That's all it needs to be about really, that and pipe organs

I like progressivism insofar as it aids social progession; the danger is too many other denominations have progressed to the point that they no longer possess that essential trait of society.

Also, again I don't care how regressive it is: pipe organs :D

Finally I just don't like steak. It usually isn't well prepared, as if a slab of cow is sufficient cuisine in and of itself  Tuna sashimi any day of the week as far as I'm concerned :)

I'm going to agree with darrin and say that if you're only spending $150, then go to a pawn show and look for a better deal.
