James HE

a spoonfull weighs a ton
So fianally after about an hour trying to get this recorded as a wave file with out it sounding like pure crap on the pure crap speakers, I tried to load it onto Just On .com but after two fifteen minute attempts (got kicked off line and still can't figure out what happened the second time)So i just stuck it on my web site
www.angelfire.com/indie/SuperIDRecords

from the main page click on "hear great music!" (pardon my cheese as i work things out) and go down to the bottom of the next page and click on "neap tide". I will post more when I get the other sections of the song complete. (I have to do the vocals parts and ther's going to be a rhodes track on there to but probably not on this section. By the way this "A Band Called 3LN" (that's really our name *sometimes*)

Tonite I relly realized the crappiness of the sound card and software that I'm using. But the music is there just note that it sounds much better on the four track and much better than anything I've recorded before finding this BBS! And Listenng to it, I can hear the limitations of my equipment (same old 4 track same old mics) but I think I can get more out of it now.

Surprise Surprise James HE. It wasn't your
soundcard that came between you and recording nirvana. It was either your software or the nut behind the wheel. I loved your Grateful dead Sound. So much that I had to correct the 12 dB deficit that I found. I converted to .wav and normalized in Sound Forge. Then I converted to 192 Kbps .mp3 in Vegas Pro.
The file can be found at:

I think you're gonna like it.
No charge for the mastering job.

drstawl...

So what's the Gratefull Dead sound? I don't listen to the dead that much- I do love Workingmans Dead though.

Actually it's the monitors that suck. If I listen to the normalized version at high volume, the bass and drums still go Brrrt... brrrt.... But thanks to you at least I have a reference as to where I can push the monitors. Hopefully I can convince my room mate to let me hook up his (or mine) stereo to the computer to have better monitoring, but i'm not even sure how to do this. I'm sure ill figure it out, get the propper adaptors and such. Or could I be able to drive my house speakers with the computers amp? Or i guess the spakers are powered- that makes more sense. I'd really hate to mix on headphones.

Another thing... Considering I'm using an original Tascam 424, a BBE 264, dbx 266Xl compressor, a couple of SM-57's and some other cheaper mics that I'm too embarrassed to mention, Where would you say my sound quality is at? I feel like I'm getting a lot considering what i'm using. If not what do I need to work on- besides getting better equipment.

The Dead reference was re: "Blues for Allah". To hook it up to a stereo (that's what I use) simply pretend that your soundcard line out is the line out from a cassette deck with different connectors. Get the adapter cables and you're set. Try getting a hotter signal to the computer when you're making your .wav files. A good digital V/U really comes in handy.

James He, thought I was hearing some Allman bro. stuff going on in there was I? anyways sounded very good to my ears, great work...Oh yea and isnt it great to have a DOC in the house!Rock on.

Yes! the doctor is in!

And about the Almann brothers- hell yeah! Duane is one of my long long list of heroes. pure soul- just listen to Dreams.

James HE,
Cool song. I thought it was a pretty good sounding mix. Sounds like you got good quality out of your tascam.
bobbo

Like it! Doc, help me out, do you hear any Fairport Convention in James HE's song?(not vocally obviously) or am I thinking about another band....gibs

Maybe a hint of Fairport Convention, but not the Chieftains' side of their style.
