Do I need to have an audio interface to connect a midi controller into my mac and use it on Logic Pro 9?
In the event that the answer to the above question is no, will latency be a substantial problem when recording a song utilizing both mics and midi?
I basically want to combine audio recording (utilizing microphones) with midi...is there an audio interface that is particularly suited for this? I would really only need to use two mics at the same time, so I don't really need the interfaces with 8 or 12 inputs...
The background...
I have an iMac 2.7 gHz with 8gb of RAM with LogicPro 9 that I received as a Christmas present (yipee!!!). I am currently in the process of learning as much as I can before purchasing any additional gear. I'd like to make the most of my money and purchase a quality piece of gear that will suit my needs. I will be recording vocals and some acoustic instruments through the XLR inputs, so it would be nice if there was a good onboard preamp that I could at least get by with for now. I've been very impressed with the performance of the Apogee One that my friend owns. He used it with a Neumann U87 to create an incredibly clear vocal track. I can only imagine what a "balanced XLR" Duet 2 is capable of. However, I'm certainly open to other suggestions.
I am not a gear-junkie by nature (I've been a musician for 14 years and I can still fit all of my gear into one room...lol). I'd like to focus on making music as opposed to the latest and greatest gear. My priorities are crisp, clear vocal tracking and accurate, realistic midi tracking. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks and sorry about the long post!
