A few questions about Rap

I have been writing rap music for a while now and I am interested in recording some stuff over some beats at home now. I am planning on buying a mic, a laptop, and whatever else is needed. Basically, I am not too sure on what mic i need (i have been trying to read around and look but i havent found much stuff), and idk what i need BESIDES a mic in order to record.


Do i just need a mic and the laptop to record?

I know this is dumb, but please help so that I can learn

You need something to connect the mic to the laptop (an interface, or an appropriate cable). You need a software program to record with/to.

A basic dynamic vocal mic should probably be fine for what you want to do, at least for now. They are available in many different price ranges.

Condensers are useful for some rappers, but really it just depends on the voice and the sound you're going for!

As for the mic/laptop thing, all I'm gonna say is that you can take this thing down the cheapest (or most expensive) route you want. You could have a usb mic straight into your laptop, or you could drop thousands on a mic and audio interface (or anywhere in between).

Standards: Shure SM7b or EV RE-20 and those are DYNAMIC mics

Do yourself a BIG favor and stay away from usb mics and adapters.
They are basically made for PODCASTING (radio chat shows), not music recording.

The analog-to-digital converters in their mini-soundcard are mediocre for music.
The poor monitoring in them will give you fits trying to overdub new tracks.
The short cords will introduce a LOT of computer fan noise.

Get yourself a real audio interface. Here's a good guide:

you need a mic/ computer interface. its like a small mixer u plug into computer. and the mic goes in to it. what program u running to record on? also, i would reccomend a condenser (powered) mic for studio rap. they look like a silver cylinder. if u want websites to see these, let me know! also, the interface thing is usually under 150.00 and MXL makes a mic called the MXL 990. its like 69.00 and really good. its what i use in my studio (thou i dont record rap)
