A different kind of mix contest

I'll try to bring out those more on the next mix, but the sound of them is pretty undesireable... it doesn't fit in well with some of the other drum sounds, which i why i tried to make them kinda low the first time.

This is the first song that I've ever tried to mix... (not really finished recording our own stuff yet)... so go easy on me.... I'm still trying to work out what all the buttons on my mixer do...

Here it is...

It's not as loud as Straves cos I don't really know how to work compression...

I tried to change it a bit... added a french horn... and an acoustic guitar (1st take... couldn't be bothered really)...

I like the song but I'm sick of it already... lol

Handsome Al

i think u might have schooled me, but atleast i didnt add anything. :) ;)

ok...i think i figured out what was up.

my "mastered" one i think i compressed way too much, so i took down the old one and put up the new one. i listened to the mp3 on my comptuer and it sound almost identical to the wav. i listened to the mp3 on lo fi and it sounded way scaled down. the hi fi should be up tomorrow, please let me know what you think. thanks guys.

I'm working on my version -- should be posted sometime today!

Listened to most of the mixes posted so far.... 3 points common to all the ones I've heard -

1) you guys are compressing WAAAAY too much, both on the final mix and the tracks themselves.

2) I've yet to hear anyone nail the mix balance properly - especially with the low-end... seems like very few people are hearing the low end properly as they're putting A LOT of bass into the mix. Also a couple with exaggerated highs.... watch the EQ!!

3) Reverb -- again, everyone seems to be putting on too much, especially on the voice.

Less is usually more.......

1) This is rock man.. it's far more important that the mix is loud... especially if preparing it for the radio. (Which should be in the mind of anyone preparing a song for a rock band... I can point you to many MCA recordings which are SO incredibly compressed) My song is naturally going to sound better because it blares (and is better.)

2) I don't know about everyone else, but this wasn't a priority... I mixed through computer speakers and some AKG headphones... I'm pretty sure my bass to music ratio is quite on, however.

3) I used reverb on every track and I doubt you can pick up on it. I mean it decays in like 18 ms or less (depending on the instrument). Except that lead track has some solo delay.

4) Thanks for your input.

Hmmm... not sure what I can say other than what you just posted was dead wrong!

No matter what genre, a good mix is a good mix, and an overcompressed mix is very obvious. As a matter of fact, you don't want to do anything special for radio - their processing will handle it anyways.... and there are a number of articles (Here - from Bob Katz - Articles, and Mercenary) that describe exactly why you should NEVER try to "compress for radio" because it's counter-productive to your overall levels.......

A well-balanced mix is ALWAYS the priority -- that's what the job of mixing is all about! (What did you think you were supposed to be doing during mixing??? Any monkey can throw up faders to create a push mix, if that's all there was to it!!!)

As I said -- just about all the mixes I heard had the same issue. And if you're mixing on computer speakers and headphones, then I'm pretty sure you got the bass levels WRONG! (But hey - I just listened in my sonically-balanced control room with ADAM monitors, so yeah, my listening space can't hold a candle to yours, I guess! ;) )

Interesting that you took my comments so personally when I was clearly making a general observations on ALL the mixes I had heard so far - I must've hit a nerve... but anyways - you're welcome!

Steady on Strave.... it wasn't that good. Your drums were pish!

I'm not entirely happy with it, but I can't spend more time on it! Anyways - here's my version.....

Wow, Bear, your mix is my favorite so far. I really think I did a good job though, especially on the drums, it will be up by the end of tonite.

Bear's mix is a wee bit dark.

And im not feelin the panned backing vox so much.

But overall its great.

Best one ive heard yet.

Nice Bruce.

Now im gonna have to enter.

Finding the time is going to be the problem.
