Hi

I just have a couple of questions regarding home recording.. not REALLY sure where to put this, but yeah.

My band has done several home recordings. However, we did not put much time in to the actual perfomance of it, usually just doing 1 or 2 takes for each instrument. This obviously resulted in a not-so- good final product, though we did spend longer mixing the songs.

One of the main problems is the quality of the drums. I have access to 6 Shure M-57's, which, though not great, will do fine for now. The thing is, we need to be able to mix each seperate drum to a seperate file. (eg- a track for the overhead, a track for the snare.. etc) I have the following equipment...

6 Shure M-57 microphones
A Packard Bell Pentium 4 computer- with Adobe Audition, and various other mixing programs. Only has original cpu souncard.
A Tascam 424mkIII 4 Track PortaStudio.

Do I need a new soundcard to be able to record seperate drum tracks?

If so, could you advise me on which one to buy?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Alex.

How about using the Tascam as a sub-mixer/recorder for
the drums, one track for kick, one for snare, one for
the hihat and the last for room ambience?

That way you should be able to fit it in you mix
a bit better by playing back each track seperatly
and recording it to pc.

So you mean record the drums on to a tape, then play each track back seperately in to the computer?

Wouldnt there be a big quality drop doing that?

Thanks a lot!

So how would it work? The microphones would all plug straight in to the soundcard?

You'll need mic preamps.
The 1010 comes with 2 preamps, but you'll need more to record a drum kit

In theory, you could use the four strips on your 424 and the two pre's on the 1010 for 6 at a shot.

Until you get a bigger mixer... :D

Thanks a lot

Oh i forgot to mention... i DO have access to someones 24- track mixer-desk thing... would it be of any use?

If it has direct outs on each track (or at least 8 such as the Mackie 1604) you can use 8 of them and the two XLR's all at the same time.

Cool, thanks.

Do you know of any other soundcards that are as good as this one, maybe slightly cheaper...?

Yep, a Delta 44. 4 analog ins and outs for $200. The 1010lt was $280 last I saw

Cool, thanks a lot for your help everybody.

Ill probably go with the 1010, considering the price and stuff.

How easy will it be to set up?
