A Complaint and a Praise...

Ahh humma humma humma
Ok... My ADATs have been faithful companions for the last year and a half... No real problems once so ever (and these puppies have 2000 - 3000 hours on them!)

Saturday, while recording my own music (go figure) one of my decks decided to chomp a tape. It did it seemingly while stopping a rewind and going back into play mode. I heard that crunch sound and just about screamed! (sorry Blue Bear... I *DO* backup tapes... but for some reason on this particular one I hadn't done it yet).

Anyhow... the tape wasn't trashed... it was just off the path.... until I tried to eject... then the door of the SVHS cassette crunched the tape. CRAP.

Well... long story short, I was frustrated to no extent. I got the tape wound up again etc and played it back in a different deck. There was OBVIOUS damage to the recording (drop outs and static).

So... I formatted another tape and decided to copy the original just so I could begin repairing... but wouldn't you know it... WHEN I COPIED IT, IT PLAYED BACK **PERFECTLY**... Oh man... how I love error correction.

So... somehow... the tape managed to play correctly that one time so I could get a perfect copy.

Anyhow... just ranting... I'm a happy guy!

The Gods of recording were smiling upon you my son. Kinda makes your sphincter pucker when you hear that "crinkle" sound don't it?:D
 
Yep... it sure does... especially considering this was for an album I am recording (its actually going to be released)... and the tape was THE DRUMS... which as we all know are a pain in the puckered sphincter to get setup and recorded.

Very pleased I don't have to redo those parts.... and all we were doing that day was adding some piano tracks.

that would be a rave, my velvet friend :)

I had the same thing happen too recently ... my tape was folder over and crunch on the edge for about 3 minutes of tape ...
I got it straighted out and when I tried to copy it ... it played back perfectly ... sure, the little asterisk was going crazy ... but the audio copied over perfectly. No errors that I could hear.

You are right... a rave not a rant :) My mistake... hehehe

Yeah, my error light was doing the old blinking dance too... but nothing audible. I guess that says something good for Alesis error recovery ability eh?

This was my first major blow out... as I have only been using these decks for about 1 1/2 years. Prior to that I had an HD based setup... and to tell you the truth, I much prefer the ADATs.

Hey... to be TOTALLY fair... I should mention this as well. The day my tape was crunched was the FIRST TIME in 2 months that the deck had even been turned on.

**AND** it was at my parent's house (they have a huge old house which makes a nice recording studio)... which had no heat and had recently had several rooms replastered.

So... they'd been sitting idle... they were freezing cold (51 degrees INSIDE the house)... and they had been prone to weeks of plaster dust throughout the entire house.

Amazing they even turned on if you really think about it :)

I have 4 ADAT's (2XT's &2LX's) of which 2 I've owned for over 3 years and have NEVER,EVER had a problem with ANY of them!
(well, with the exception of an interpolation error code caused by 1 of dragonworks 16 bit tapes).
I treat my ADAT's like they were one of my own children! Heads & capstan roller cleaning and replacement on regular intervals, internal dust-removal and covered in breathable clear plastic covers when not in use.
Luv my ADAT's!!!!!!

Yeah... I bought three black face ADATs from OceanVu studios in Miami... Victor (owner/operator) had been using them for years.. Mix, Billboard and a few other studio mags did articles on him because he used standard ADATs in his pro line studio (including a Euphonix 3000 series board). I think he originally had 6, but moved to M20's. He made several "award winning" albums (Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, Shakira etc.) on the same decks that I have, so its kind of cool. That's why mine have so many hours on them... but I got a great deal on three of them plus a BRC.
