I first want to thank Slackmaster2000 for putting this mp3 up on his mp3.com site!!! Thanks Slack! That was cool of you! :)

I was asked to remix this song. The studio owner already mixed it about 3 years ago for the band, and it used to be an instrumental. The band brought in a singer and put words to this song, and tracked the voice this week. Anyway, the owner just didn't have his heart in it and asked me to do it. So I did.

The first 1 minute of this mp3 is a "faders up" mix, meaning there is NO EQ, Dynamic Processing, Effects, or any other tricks I use when mixing. The second 1 minute of this mp3 is where I left off on the mix today. It is not finished because the client wasn't there, and the studio owner felt that the guitar player was going to want more effects on everything and the guitars louder! LOL So I decided to leave it until Tuesday night when the client comes in to finish up.

Anyway, I am just posting this to show what you can do with reverb, delay, compression, and eq. This was mixed on a Yamaha O2R using all internal dynamic processing. I did use an Eventide Harmonizer for a pitch shift setting on the backup vocals and some of the background guitars, and a Yamaha SPX 90 for the delay. I used the two onboard effects on the O2R for the two reverbs (one was a short ambiant thing for fattening up the drums a bit, the other was for the more obvious reverb effect).

I will note here that there WAS in fact some processing done. The tom tracks were edited to remove the noise inbetween hits. When I finish the mix, I will post it with another "faders up" mix that uses the original tom tracks. You will be amazed how bad "ringing toms" kill the kick drum in a mix!!! You don't hear that here because I didn't have time to fly the original tom tracks back into the Alesis HD24 from the computer for the faders up portion. But you will hear it soon!

Anyway, enjoy!

thanks...
I agree, the first minute sounds like a "faders up"..and just a monitor mix off the board.

Reverb can make all the difference in the world, and hence, why I often overuse it!!:D

...(man...when will "they" ever get back to the phil collins drum sound?:p )

the second clip just sounds more pleasing owing to the ambience.
Unfortunatley, many people are beginning to use reverb less and less.

Thanks sonusman.
