i just did a quick tracking of this... i don't know about this one. it seems...i don't know....

any feedback would be highly appreciated.

i don't know if i want to keep these vocal takes as finals...

maybe this song needs some production?

anything you think, just tell me.

Interesting song. I like it. Gtr could stand a small cut around 100-200 Hz. Vocal's a little roomy sounding, while the guitar's very close mic'd sounding. I'd try to get them to balance more that way, or have the guitar a little farther away in the mix depth.

yeah. those vocals were done in a smaller room and i was getting an even more crappy reverb sound out of them.

i hate the room i'm in.

i used a different take for one of the parts that it was an obvious take change

i did cut the guitar a little in the 200 range. the guitar is in a strange tuning and the bassiness does get a little nuts.

i did a cut in the vocals at 2.6 or so and it took care of some strange tone problem.

it's better. thanks

crits on the actual song are welcome as well

I like the guitar track very much, but the vocals are a little too angst. (Difficulties metastatic Charles) Ever listen to The Book Of Right On by Joanna Newsome? Sounds pretty familiar.

Aside from the lyrics, which I feel uncomfortable with because I hate a song that's smarter than I am, (Never read James Joyce) the vocal effects are a little distracting. When you can hear them, then back down just a little usually works for me.

I like the song too - it is what I would classify as modern folk rock. Listen to the arrangement I could envision strings definitely, to carry the song along. Strings go well with an emotion filled vocal such as this one. It holds it's own also as is, sort of a Neil Young at Massey Hall vibe to it.

sadly, there's no FX on this besides compression and reverb.

and i made the reverb basically inaudible.

it's all the horrid horrid room. it's just like...standing waves when i get loud.

i do know joanna newsom's book of right on. odd that you say that...that's a 2 chord diatonic progression in 4/4...this verse is a 4 chord non diatonic (chromatic mediant b3) in 6/8.

very joanna newsom-esque though.

the lyrics are probably not above you.

it's about 2 friends (1 each verse)...both with depression...one would get panic attacks, his hands would get clammy, and he would go out on walks with this girl...which she was the reason he had the panic attacks.

the other person can't relate to people...people are screwed up...but god's supposed to work through people...and so there's this...paradox.

the chorus is just saying i want to make happy popular (like how emo has been popular)

i don't think i'll produce this...i'm just tired of it all. i burnt my 12 track cd...and listened to it. this has to be the worst track on it...to me at least

The vocals sound like you're a little wasted at the beginning.
This needs a little 'cello strident in the more powerful parts or a lilt in the picked parts or both!
Good song, needs to rerecorded in a more neutral space though.
A couple of passages could use a close mic to get a Famous Blue Raincoat/Lenny Cohen vibe.

Hello!

Connor Oberst anyone? That´s a very interesting song! Sounds pretty emotional, though I didn´t get most of the lyrics. You have a very powerful voice and I like the fact that it sounds a bit roomy. But was the similarity to Connor Oberst intentional? This track really reminded me of his earlier works before he became all dylan-ish.

I don't find it conner oberst much. If anything damien riceish. But then again, I really hate it when people say I sound like a band I've never even listed to... so you just sound like you man, and this song is really rad.

I like it a lot

You said you cut around 100-200.. maybe cut more?
or boost more around 3k?

Also the vocals could come up a bit.

Cruddy room or not, this song is hot. Worst song on your cd? Doubtful. If so, I really want to hear everything else.

I agree with the drunken beginning, hah, but listening past it and it sounds great.

EDIT: I take that back, i hear connerishness only at the drunken beginning :)

Do you have a music myspace? I want it.

I really hate it when people say I sound like a band I've never even listed to... so you just sound like you man, and this song is really rad.

That´s a bad habit of mine and you´re absolutely right. Comparisons = Evil! This song = Rad! That´s what I wanted to say with my first post but you phrased it so much better. :)

very good song. i think the vocals sound fine, the guitar is a little bassy for my taste. this sounds pretty grungy and soulful in an honest way, which i always like to hear.

thanks everyone.

the first post was a fairly minimal edit.

after i got feedback, i edited it accordingly.

i got it to sound better, and i think i'll take the advice of adding some cello.

my myspace is my homepage if you click my name and go down the options. just bare in mind that the mixes on myspace have changed since their uploads. (except passive farmer, i just uploaded that)

i have never heard of Connor Oberst, but in the morning i'll have to search him out

i've been busy fixing a lot of other things in individual tracks along with the volumes of the larger work. (cd)

i have been listening back and even with the edited improvement from the original post, i skip this song because i don't tolerate it...yet.

production definitely helps to fill out what my performance lacks.

cello - Connor Oberst - look up bright eyes: his more popular band.
I dig the music on your myspace.

oh. i've heard of bright eyes. i think i've gotten that before. the voice i'm guessing...i heard him a long time ago...before he sang much in tune. i guess i hardly ever do either.

wish i did. sometimes if you've got a good voice and everything else is shit you're called brilliant, and other people do everything else for you.

instead i've been called shit, and so i've done everything else myself.

so...kinda funny.

i think i recorded vocals using the BACK of the mic. i'll be redoing them. i messed around with the cello, but didn't get anywhere...i will try more...but i'll see how it will work.

i'm fairly involved with my community, and when i get home i have a short short window of time before the woman downstairs goes to bed (8:30)

i will give an update with the track soon!
