a 4 track interface ...any advice, brands/models?

Hi,

It was mentioned to me to buy a 8 track interface for what i want record.
But í've come to the conclusion that this option is way too expensive for me (mind that i also have to buy 8 mics than).......
Normally I will just be recording 2 channels (stereo) at the same time. (or 4 , stereo guitar, stereo drum).

and I thought that i I want to do a demo for my band.
i can use the 4 track as wel.
using 3 tracks for mics. and 1 track i use the mics which are setup in our mixer and use the mics from there.. so than again i will have like 6/7 mics to record drums while the last 3 will all come through one channel. that's ok for the overhead i guess.

can you tell me which great 4 track/line interfaces there are, brand names and such? i'm a total n00b to that. i have googled for it.

and also a second hand interface, is that worth checking or would you advice to buy new onces all the way?
on you tube you see people having recroding with a music box..is that also some kind of interface?
 
Mind you that The Beatles Sgt. Peppers was all done on a 4 track master tape machine. ;)
 
With the money you save you can hire George Martin to mix it.

No, you don't have to buy any mics if you only record VI's.

But the larger point is that you might want to record a full band, and that if you do so, you plan to use quite a few mics, so doesn't that cancel out the above statement?

Do this...

This board is littered with posts from people who bought a small interface and are now wanting to buy a larger one. And based on what you say you want to do, you are probably going to want a larger interface more sooner than later.

So go ahead and buy an interface with the largest number of inputs you can afford; you'll be better off in the long run...

Not a good comparison...

The number of inputs on an interface doesn't really have anything to do with how many recording tracks can be used.

And while the Beatles may have only used four recording tracks for Sgt. Peppers, the console had quite a few more than four inputs...
 
yes i was thinking about that also.... i have to do tricks to get somehow the same result with a 4 track as with a 8 track (i know it will never be the same results)

i already so some 8 track interfaces on EBAY ... i already forgot the name of the damn thing....but it's only 150 euro's there while its 350 here

so thatá good effort for a 8 track i guess.
i hope audicity works with a 8 track as well :-) ..recognize it so to speak.

I use a Tascam 1641 which will do 16. The 1800 is the replacement for my discontinued model and I believe it is in the $350 range in the states. Not sure about cost where you reside.
