This is a silly post just because I'm excited.
I started tracking my friends' band's 6 song EP just a bit over two months ago, taking 9 full Saturday/Sunday sessions, and we finally finished up last night. It's been one hell of a journey so far, with countless hours spent after tracking doing edits on everything from Drums to Vocal comps (which was a good 10 or 12 hours alone!).
I tried a whole bunch of things with them, and they were cool in letting me call the shots for some of the production elements due to my "experience" (whatever that means, this was only my second full bad recording, the other of which was only 2 tracks with far better resources. But, I do have experience in terms of learning and asking questions, so it was good to finally put more of that to use).
The drums were done in a nice studio space because we had money then, then the guitars, bass, and vocals were all done in the guitarist/singer's living room. It's an old house with wooden everything and about 9.5 feet ceilings. We used a little 15 Watt Marshall Solid State amp for the guitars, mic'd with a CAD snare drum mic (super cardoroid, and surprisingly close in tone to a 57). For the vocals, because the reflections were so horrendous, I made a make shift booth using a frame of PVC pipe with thick blankets clipped to it, along with a queen size mattress behind the singer. Reflections are by no means gone, but it actually worked dang well! No one will ever ask if it was done in a wooden living room. I'm proud of my ingenuity on that.
I'm going to give my head a rest for a week or so before I start the mixes, because honestly, although I love the songs, I'm simply tired of them right now. I must have heard them a hundred times each or more by now.
I'll be sure to post them all in the MP3 clinic as they get finished!
