Hi all,
I am completely new to recording. Always wanted to do it, but never got to. After some research I've come down to the 840GX or the Tascam 788. I've read threads comparing this units, but still have doubts. I've read a lot of complaints about Roland not supporting this unit (no upgrades) and pretty much kicking it off the market. The 840GX is 20 bits and not 24. How bad is this? Does it compress the audio data before it writes to the zip disc. Can I mix down to a .wav file to burn it on the computer's cd burner? I will appreciate any comments and suggestions, as well as praises and shortcomings of this machine.

Can't comment much about the 840. I can say that I love my 880 and that you can get them used for around $650.

Got one recently myself, and am pretty happy with it (only $130.00) the vs planet has a lot of information on using it. And the people on it, like here, are very friendly and helpful. If you get one, read the manual a little, then fart around with it a lot..... the sound may not rival an old analog 8-track, but the ease of finding, rewinding, and overall space to work in is (to me) worth the cash. good luck, and have fun
