will the 788 work on cd recorders other than Tascam? I think someone here mentioned getting a list of compatible cd recorders that are friendly with the 788. anyone know? I have a Philips dual deck and my computer has a NEC cdrw/dvd recorder/player combo.

This gets asked a lot, and the answer isn't very promising.

The short answer is no.

You need an approved drive IF:
If you want to use the 788 and burn direct from the recorder. The 788 can also use the CDW to back-up your songs -- including all song data -- all tracks, virtual tracks, edits, effect settings, undo history, etc.

You want to restore a song that has been backed up to a CD, either from a back-up you made -- or that someone else made on their 788.

However, you can use other CDW's, if you plan to just record your mastered output after you've mixed everything down to a stereo pair.

You can send out the signal either via the digital or analog outs to another CD, or computer. A lot of people use this route for additional mastering with their computer before burning the CD with the computer.

You can check on Tascam's forum for more information on the above or this FAQ:

You can put together your own approved drive by buying a bare drive and external case, cables, etc. You can about 150.00 off of the price of the retail product if you do-it-yourself.

Approved Tascam Drives: (All SCSI)
TEAC CD-W512S (12x10x32) - Current Model CD-RW
TEAC CD-R58S (8x24) - CDR Discontinued
TEAC CD-R56S (6x24) - CDR Discontinued

thanks Bruce,
good stuff to know. One more question, if you do master and mixdown to a stereo pair, and then burn a cd on another cd recorder, does this remove the data from the 788 hard drive?

Anyone now the best price for getting a Digital In installed into my computer?

I am buying a Tascam 788, but can't afford the CDR yet, so I want to use my computer.

Thanks

If I get you right -- Not automatically. Though you can save/delete at will, including a special 'delete unused' function which deletes the undo history to free up extra space.

For instance, after mastering and mixdown, you can back up your song data to a cd -- the completely erase it from the HD and restore it later if needed.

The new V.20 will also allow you to export individual 24bit wave audio tracks.

Have you looked for a used Midiman Audiophile 24/96? They are like 179.00 new, and include S/PDIF digital I/O.

I use the S/PDIF out on the 788 to SB live with an adaptor i got from computer geeks for about $15, I don't think they have them anymore. Too bad, it works great. This way I can do my stereo editing on Sound Forge 5.0 and 'master' a song for a number of applications.

Also there are tedious ways to back up your tracks to a computer but basically Tascam has you by the balls and you have to have a Tascam burner to back up. And it's very slow.

Since I don't use a lot of virtual tracks and the songs are not all that large in terms of data, my plan, when v 2.0 comes out is to go with a quiet 60 gig hard drive, record a few hundred songs, pull it out and put another one in, and the loaded hard drive is my backup.
