Im having trouble getting a good mix for a band that is using a 7 sting guitar and 5 string bass. Both are tuned down a 1/2 step, then sometimes they are dropped on the low B string (a# actually) another whole step like you would do drop D tuning on a regular guitar.

I know this is low, but alot of bands do it now a days.

Any advice on how to get a balanced sound between the guitar and bass? In looking for some specific frequencies that can be cut or boosted to get me started on either instruments.

Then throw in that the kick drum cant be burried in the mix either.

I know it all starts with a good set up on both bass and guitar before hitting the record button,so maybe someone out there knows of a general good set up for those instruments amps and such?

Thanks.

My both metalbands play in B...

While mixing that rumble together, I pay alot of attention to the TOP-ends of the sounds. like maybe:

-kick: boost at 80hz AND 2000hz and cut seriously away around those frequencies.
-bass: boost at 150hz AND 3000hz cut mud out from 300hz, kill everything above 7000hz
-guitars: boost at 200 hz dip at 350 hz boost somewhere at 5000 hz..

All those frequencies must be tweaked by ear to suit the band/instruments/atmosphere wanted...

-kill everything under 40hz to reduce rumble.

That's usually a good starting point. after that eq and compress to taste..
