okay... I have a mesa/boogie power amp with 6L6's in it... i want to try out some 6550's... They sound more punchy... firstly, would the 6L6 slots be able to accomodate the 6550 tubes? and if they could, would I need to get a bais readjustment?

~thanks

Hey Music..
Yes they will fit in the 6L6's slot and yes you will need a bias adjustment. What I don't know is if there is something else that needs to be done on the Boogie. I did it on a Carvin Valvemaster a couple of years ago with no problem.

Later.

I had it done on a Marshall 2205, and the tech adjusted the bias, which isnt an option. I use the Groove Tube H7's, they have a little edge to them, pretty good tone. The slots for EL34's are same as well.

Peace,
Dennis

Boogies have the bias hardset and I know they have a switch on the tremo for el34s but I think you should just call boogie and ask em.

The pinout is the same, but the 6550's will draw more current than the 6L6. Some components will likely need to be changed. Boogies are fixed-bias amps. That is they don't have an adjustment control like Fenders or Marshalls.

I doubt that Mesa would support such a swap. If it were me, I'd keep the 6L6.

Just my $.02

Yeah, I don't think I would do that with my amp. 6550's are a higher output tube and you could definately fry something. For sure you should check with Mesa and also Groove Tube has a lot of information on changing tube types.

boogies are 6L6 amps... i don't think changig the tubes would help your sound... possible, though expensive...
