$6000 question

If I record something with 6 $1000 mics, will it sound as good as using one $6000 one?
 
No, but it will sound 6 times as good as a single $1000 mic.
 
If you can get one more $1,000 mic I would go for the $7,000 sound.
 
I agree with timboz. You're wasting your time until you reach the $7000 range.
 
You can probably find the mics used for $600 each so you could get 10. Then you'd be set.

this thread is very mild on the sarcasm compared to some of the threads i've seen around here over the last couple of years. what was the thread involving lining a guitar amp with that playground foam stuff? :p

OK, so an Ela M 251 is worth about $18,000. So I'd either have to get 18 $1000 mics, or 30 $600 mics, right?
 
Whats the best mic under $99 to record the sound of a $6000 mic.

So wait, if I record something with a $30,000 mic, and then record from the speakers on my boom box with a $30 mic, it'll sound like a $30,030 mic right?

Just create an impulse of the $30k mic and all your $30 mics will sound like gold.

I think you have to subtract in that instance. It would be like recording with a $29,970 mic.

Of course, those mics have to run through preamps. Let's say something nice, like $1,000 a channel. Better yet, how about a channel strip, like a Pendulum Audio Quarter II at $4,500 per channel.

Let's see:

1) One $6,000 mic and one Quartet II. Total cost $10,500.

2) Six $1,000 mics plus six Quartet IIs. Total cost $33,000.

Plus the numerous phase issues which will arise with 6 mics are priceless.

Shall we add AD converters?
 
It's not the cost of high-end mics that makes them cool and fun.

It's that they're instruments just like a Les Paul Deluxe or Rhodes piano. ;)

I don't get why someone wouldn't use the best-sounding mic or pre or whatever for any given situation if they have the ways and means.

Does a Hasselblad take better pictures than a Brownie??? I don't know. Both are fun to mess around with for different reasons. But the Brownie is probably better suited for the birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese.

I gave my kid an AKG C3000. I can't stand the sound of it. He thinks it's the greatest thing. He's doing podcasting with it.

Man, I'd love to play around with a Lawson or an AEA 44 knockoff. Or an M49.

Who wouldn't?????
