I'm looking at getting a 6 string banjo for grins. Can anyone explain the difference in the number of bracket hooks used on a banjo? Some have 30 and others less.
It's not uncommon to see 30 or even 32 brackets on early banjos. This was probably to compensate for tension rings constructed of thinner or inferior metal. An 11" 24 bracket rim is the modern standard and is quite sufficient. Be advised that the fretboard on many 6 string banjos is narrower for some reason. I recommend you pay attention to the specs as you make your selection.
I played & recorded a 6 string banjo recently - it was a quite cheap brand.
Easy to play BUT the strings it came with were way too heavy, the brackets were quite weak metal & the metal links provided for a strap were inclined to rattle.
