Linux Man...
I am going to have about 5K to spend on a mixer hopefully in early July. I am trying to do some research on it now to figure out what i need and find the best price.

I mainly use a computer based setup housed around a MOTU 2408MKII. I also use an ADAT occasionally. My main software I use is Nuendo, Cubase, and Cool Edit Pro.

I want a mixer that can take full advantage of the MOTU 2408MKII i/o, interface with my adat, control Nuendo etc, and has decent mic pres. I guess that means I want a digital mixer. I would be wiling to not have digital if it still had at least a scene recall, but I don't think there any mixers like that for under 5 grand in the analogue world.

The choices I have come up with are:

Yamaha 01V with ADAT or TDIF cards
Berringher DDXwhatever with ADAT or TDIF cards
Yamaha O2R (probably used because of cost)
Spirit/Soundcraft 328
Spirit/Soundcraft 328 XD (New blue one)
Tascam DM24

If there are any others, I would love to hear options/opinions.

I guess what I am looking for is

1) What would you get with 5K
2) What is your opinion about the choices I have listed
3) are there other choices I am not considering and should be?
(Controller, analog)

Thanks,
MIKE

i saw a used mackie D8B go for $6000 on ebay... save a little more cash...

Thanks for the replies.
I guess I am kind of opposed to the Mackie D8B. I have a friend who owns one and loves it, but I just dislike Mackie. The ones I have had all had things go wrong with them, in addition to that, having to buy different types of plugins is annoying since I already have spent money on VST/DirectX ones.

I don't know too much about the Ghost, are they still made or only in a used market? Are they digital? I guess I will go do some HW.

The Soundracs Topaz Project 8 series really intrigues me, but they are only found used now. I think $3999 list, $800-$1200 used. There is some good info here if you search for soundtracs

The Full Compass catalog (now that's some dream material) still has them listed. The plainest-jane 24x8 lists for 5495. The 32x8 with MIDI/time code and remote control features lists for 7695. Call 'em up and ask. 800 356-5844, ext 1116 for Joel. Tell him I sent you (not that it will do anything for you, but it might for me when I buy ;)

Ghost info so far,
I did look at the Ghost a little more in detail and it seems like they really are awesome, but to do what i want, I think i need to spend about 7,000, and that is a little out of the budget. I like the midi, and timecode options, and of course the meter bridge. I am not so sure as to what I want to do yet.

Keep the replies coming though, opinions about other routes are ok too :p

Well, if you're opposed to the Mackie d8b (which I love) a pair of cascaded DM24s will keep you in your budget.

Scott
P.S. NO console will let you load plug-ins that you bought for a DAW into it. The only one really worth having for the d8b is the Massenburg EQ, which is worth 10 times what they charge for it...

What does having the Motu have to do with needing a digital mixer? Does it have enough digital outs to matter? If you are gonna spend that much on a mixer, nothing will compare to a decent analog mixer soundwise. Vintage king has a used Trident Flexmix you might want to check on, and I'm not sure what the Neoteks are going for these days, but they have a used Neotek too (same guy that makes the Sytek pres was a neotek designer) look around for seriously good used boards... buying a brand new $5000 console is crazy when you can get a used $10,000 console for $5,000, ya know? Check into it.
See how much the Calrec stuff is, too.... the Eq's on the Calrec are world class. They have a Clarec sidecar with 12 pre's and 4 band parametric there, and it might be a good price. Maybe not. Let me know if you find out though. Point is, look around for an EXCELLENT board, maybe even an API or Neve that has been mostly parted out but has enough modules left to suit you. You might end up with a 64 module frame with only 12 modules, but so what? I'm rambling... good luck.

TubeDude, interesting idea, I did some looking on ebay and they do have some things like what you described, but I am afraid I don't know enough about them know good prices, if they work, how to set them up etc. I also was hoping to avoid TT patching since it is so much more expensive.

I took a look at the Tascam DM-24 today, I wasn't all that impressed. What features does it have over other mixing consoles, like O1V, DDX, and the soundcraft 328?

I do appreciate everyone's input so far though, sorry if I am difficult.

If I had 5k....

I would save up another grand or so and get a used MCI 600 series....used one at another studio and love it. Thats what I hope to get in another year or so.....(wishing).

If you dont wanna save more, I'd choose the Ghost for sure.

Guess I'm not much help...I just want a MCI.:(

what format is ghost

Hi, new here, just the info mam, is the ghost digital or analog. If its digital, I have a bone to pick with someone.....
fitz:confused:

from what I can tell the Ghost is analogue but you can get recall and mmc options on it. Basically, best of both worlds.

Although I think the term Superanalogue is a trademark owned by solid state logic, it sounds like the right term to describe the ghost. You can get it with recall and all that cool digital stuff that makes stuff easier, but it handles all the audio in analog format.

The general opinion around here is the Soundcraft ghost, and while I am not opposed to that in the least, I think it is out of budget from what i can tell. I need 32 channels, mmc, and recall. If anyone knows of places to get quality used ghosts, please let me know. Otherwise, the jury is still out.

MIKE

id go with soundcraft.

or...

Yamaha o2r is a nice digital desk.

Does anyone know how much the 02r96 is going to be? I would guess about 6K plus I/O cards, but I can't find anything for sure.
