Actually, ribbons handle quite a bit of spl, it's the moving of air that causes problem. I use them on cabs and kick drum all the time. I just put pop filter in front and when using them on kick, I make sure to keep it outside the blast area of the hole on the front of drum.

I wish I had and i5 but until I get one I won't comment.

I second the AKG D770. Very versatile for an inexpensive vocal mic.

I like the EV RE11 or any in that series from RE10 to RE18. Solid workhorse mics that can take the SPL. Good details in the highs.

Also check out the Peavey 520i or 520tn. I've heard them called the poor man's SM7 but since I'm a poor man I don't have an SM7 to compare it with. Good for everything from bass drum to vocals.
