i just got a portastudio 488 mkI off ebay, and i'm having some problems. no matter what panning, track, or input i am using, it only records to the left speaker. i've tried several different cables and headphones, and it still only records to the hard left. i don't know if i just have it set up wrong or if something is wrong with the recorder itself. like i said, i've tried using different panning settings, and recording on different tracks and groups. any ideas? thanks

First off ...How is your 488 hooked up to your speakers? Are you using the headphone Jack or the Group outs? Those RCA group out Jacks on the back can go to shit real fast, I need to learn how to and re-solder group 1 and 2 on mine. If siganl is going out through 1 and 2 switch to 3 and 4. If it's going out through 3 and 4, try one and two. I highly suggest that you use the headphone out for you monitors as suggested in the manual, it will make life a lot easier. It is an unfortunate flaw of that model that there are no control room or monitor outs. To see if the speakers are the culprit and you don't have another pair to test on......switch the RCA's around (switch 1 with 2 or 3 with 4) You should hear sound come out of the other speaker now if the speakers are not at fault. Start with that hope that it helps.. Oh yeah, if you are already using the headphone jack for your speakers make sure that both Groups 1(left) and 2(right) or both 3 and 4 are depressed in the monitor section. 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4.........hope that this makes sense This might be the first time that I tried to explain something to someone on this board that was'nt my problem :)
