What is the best way to record drums from a 4 input behringer mixer to my Tascam 424? Im usinf track 1 for geetar / track 2 for bass/ track 3 for vocals.

How in hell do I assign the drums to track 4 from my mixer? Do I set up on 5/6 or 7/8 and put track 4 on buss, or whats the easist and most sensible way to do this? I assume mt Behringer goes into the Tascam "sub input", but where do I go from there. It doesnt matter to me what track number I use for drums, I just need to figger it out!

I have been experimenting and screwing everything up,erasing tracks, etc.
Im using in my Behringer 2 ohs / bass drum mike, and snare drum mike.

Thanks!!

Erm.

Buss all the mics to buss 1 and plug the output of buss 1 into channel 4 of the 424?

My first question would be, why do you need the Behringer mixer in the chain?

(Is it for phantom power to condenser mics?)

If, by chance, you're using all dynamic or battery powered condenser mics, I'd say skip the Behringer mixer & use the 424mkII's internal mixer to assign your drum mics to your desired tape track,... in this case track 4,... as simple as that.

To assign mic inputs to track 4, you'd pan right & put track 4's record mode on BUSS/R.

;)

To follow up a bit on Dave's post, it's important with these devices to get your head around the fact that channels and tracks are different. The 424mkii has 4 channels that you can plug mics into (1-4 on the left side of the machine). Using the pan control for each CHANNEL, you can send it to either the left buss, the right buss, or both (pan ctrl centered). THEN, bassed on those pan controls for your input CHANNELS, you can select which track to record to by the little sliding switches under the digital readout. Track 1 and 3 will pick up any CHANNEL panned left (in the Buss L switch position), and 2 and 4 will pickup any channel panned R (in the Buss R switch position). So, you could plug 4 mics into CHANNELS 1-4, pan them all hard R, and record them all mixed together on track 2 OR 4. OR both, if you are so inclined.

Now, back to your original question, using an output from your mixer, you'd be best off using the appropriate cable to simply route your mixer into one of the CHANNELS 1 -4, and proceeding the way I mentioned above. If you want a mono drum mix, swing the pan for however many outputs in one direction or the other, and switch your Track select switch accordingly.

It took me (literally) years to get away from the direct recording option (the other switch selection), and it does open up more mixing options where needed.

Edit: Regarding the sub input, I tend to use this one as a way to add one more track (typically fx from a cd, or something) when I am mixing down the whole multirack mix to something else - computer, minidisc, etc. I don't use it to add tracks to the 4 track tape. YMMV.

reply to my own thread forgot "Phantom Power"

Thanks all,

I did forget to mention that my ohs are phantom powered. I guess that means I have to go throught the beringer as it has phantom power. Does the 424 have phantom power also? because if it does, I can bypass the behringer as advised. Thanks, I dont have a manual with the 424 although I do have one on the way.

one more question

I really appreciate everyones help, as I am trying to get going before I get my manual. If I pan everything to the right to track 4, how do I listen to my playback from my other instruments and vocals on track 1-3 while I record drums on to track 4 via pan controls.

I promise...no more questions once the manual gets here!

Through the monitor section.

When you set the channels of the 424 to off anything on the corresponding tracks will play back through the monitor section (those controls in each channel strip marked Eff 2/Mon) along with whatever is coming through on any channel set to mic/line.

You need to press the stereo L/R button down before it'll work.
