ok,
i have been using a tascam 424 mkII for quite some time now, and its been running pretty much without a flaw. but at sometime or another within the last month or something, the panning has become virtually non-existent. has anyone ever heard of this happening?
what goes on is that when you turn the knob to the right - clockwise- the tracks volume increases. the other way, and the volume decreases, until it is muted. it really makes no sense, like, its not just like one knob broke, eveyr knob just is non-functional now. it could be something simple that i am overlooking, could anyone offer any advice? i dont want this to force me to go digital or anything!! i've asked around in many places and havent gotten any help yet! if you have any ideas, ill greatly appreciate it!

thanks.

With only those details to judge,...

it sounds like the left half of the Stereo L/R Buss has gone bad.

haha, are you being sarcastic? can the left half of my recorder just 'go bad'? this thing hasnt even gotten that much use!

There may be an issue with a stereo summing buss which could point to almost anything from a faulty connector on the PCB or a cold solder joint to a failed component on the PCB.

Bottom line here is that the unit needs to be looked at by a qualified service center.

Also check all of the patch cords being used in the set up to ensure there's no bad connections, loose shorted or otherwise.

Unplug everything from the unit and try it with headphones to quickly eliminate the possibility of it being a problem somewhere outside of the Portastudio.

When and if you bring it into a shop for service be very clear about when and how the problem appears so that they can trace it down faster and cheaper for you.

Good luck.

Cheers! :)
