424 mkIII problem - main output too low!

The main output through my headphones on my recently-acquired 424 mkIII is really really quiet. I've tried several pairs of headphones, it's not them. In order to hear really anything, I have to crank the gain WAY past the red and turn the level control all the way up. Additionally, I have tried both the RCA-jack outputs into a mixing board and tried my headphones through there, and I still have to crank the gain/level on everything just to barely hear my recording. I recorded my track on the 424 and got good levels and such, and when I play the same tape in my trusty 414 and the volume is fine.

Additionally, when I enable either of the effects channels and turn up the individual effect level control on a track, I can hear that at a regular volume (of course, that doesn't help me much, since there's no pan or EQ if I just listened to the effects sends mixes), it's like there's something wrong with my main mix. Did I get a bum unit? If so, that would be my third broken Portastudio, and as much as I like the one fully operational one that I own, it makes me start to lose my faith in them.

:(

Sounds like your mains are broken...especially if line outs, monitors out and headphones out are all low... Try channel outs?

I just tried the channel out into my mixing board, and I can hear it at a normal level. Does this confirm that my "mains" are broken? Could someone elaborate on what that means exactly, and is it fixable/worth getting fixed?

I think a similar thing is happening to me, same brand and model. All the levels are perfect, the sound coming through the monitor is just fine, but when I record and play it back it's ridiculously quiet, and even if I turn up the level all the way while the tape is playing back the sound is still barely audible. This happens with both my phones and RCA Out jacks. I'm not sure what the issue is.

What level do you track at?

My levels on my tascam are reeeeeallly low! Help?

Okay, I just purchased a Tascam 424 mkiii. I was recently recording digitally, but I gave that up to go analog. Well, I got it in the mail today, then I plugged it up to test it out. Little did I know, everything was coming out really quiet. All outputs. The line in, monitors, and the headphone jack. I can't return it and I don't know how to get it fixed. Someone please help?
