Learning, always learning
I've got what might be a stupid question. On the rear of the 424 there is switching for the dbx (off, on, and sync). I know that sync is supposed to disable the dbx on channel 4 to prevent problems when syncing with other equipment. However, is dbx disabled in the stereo mixdown as well (channel 4 upon playback), or is it just the tape outputs? I just noticed that mine is set to "sync" and I'm in the middle of pulling in some audio from some field recordings over the weekend. Didn't want to flip the switch in the middle of it and possibly have to start the playback over again.:p

The switch effects the dbx circuit going into and out of the tape...what I mean is that the effect of the switch setting will be heard on any buss that you are using to monitor playback, and any buss you are using to record. You're not going to cause any trouble if you change the switch setting during playback, only during recording. Does that make sense?

Yep, makes sense to me. Thanks a bunch for the info!
