I'm really new to recording, and i don't have a whole a lot of money, and i want to know what the best 4-track in the $300 range would be. I just want something to record my band, nothing fancy. any suggestions would be appreciated.

TASCAM Porta 02 $159 US (not very good)
TASCAM 414MKII $299 US (better)
FOSTEX X-14 $149 US (see porta 2)
FOSTEX x-24 $289 US (see 414)

Those are all tape based machines that you can do a lot with, but are limited by the noise and signal loss of analog inherint with machines in that price range.

You may be able to get a used digital recorder of some sort which would greatly increase quality and flexibility.

Or, if someone in your band has a computer, I'm sure you could put something together in the way of a DAW.

I don't know shit about computer recording.

Check www.musiciansfriend.com and scroll away in the recording section.

I own a Tascam 414 and am perfectly happy with it. When I finish a song THEN I load it into my CPU via Cubasis VST to burn to CD and thats when all the SH!t starts! But,The 414 I am very comfortable with to do my demos. Wouldn't it be nice to concern myself
mainly with the artistic content of my recordings and not so much with how I am going to get all this crap to work!

What do you reckon on the Yamaha MT400 in this company??
Anyone got any thoughts or experience of this machine?

Go with the Tascam 414 or the Yamaha MT400, both are reliable, quality units in that price range.

You could try going 2nd hand- me + my band recently picked up a 2nd hand Fostex FD-4 digital multitracker for £250 (dunno in $), and that came with a zip drive plus disks! Just because its 2nd hand doesnt mean its been heavily used...

I agree with Philly. Go to e-Bay or Harmony Central, I bet you can get the FD-4 for what you want to spend and I think you will be very happy with it. With all the newer 8, 12 and 16 tracks coming out there should be alot of these digital 4-tracks flooding the market.

Peace, Jim
