4 track question

i have a problem, i just got a tascam MF-P01 4 track recorder and i hear what's coming through the input through the headphones, but i can't hear the playback through the headphones. does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Is the level turned up for the track that you're trying to play back?

Is it switched to mix?
Are the play back tracks turned up?
Is there anything on those tracks? Sounds silly BUT you may have erased them accidentally.
Have you consulted the manual ?
Are the switches on those tracks set away from record?
There are a whole pile of potential things to do/undo.
