Hello, I'm new to the group, but I've been reading here on and off for a couple years. Here are my first (there will be more!!) 4 questions that I have:

I'm using a Yamaha cs2x, Nord micro modular, Korg Kaoss Pad, and a PC... no monitors yet:( I spent all my money on my synths. anyway....

1. I'm running the cs2x through the nord and then through the Kaoss pad to the PC... would this add extra noise? (I rarely use the kaoss pad, so I'm going to remove it from the chain unless I need it for effects)

2. Where do I adjust my levels for recording my synths? the ouput levels on the machines or the recording levels on the PC? or both? Does it matter? Is there a good level to record individual tracks?

3. can I record stereo tracks and still be able to effectively pan them during the mixing phase? Does this add any phase problems or mud to the mix? or should I record just the left channel as a mono track?

4. I've been using a Multi band compressor patch on the Nord while recording the cs2x... would compressors be a NO NO for line in recording of synthesizers? should I record without comp, and add it later during mixing?

thanks for your help !

If you've got a mixer just run both the CS2x and the Nord into the line in jacks and then take the stereo outs of the board into the PC.

You adjust the levels with reference to the levels on the PC. Control the volumes from the mixer.

Stereo tracks can be panned as effectively as mono tracks can.

The Multi-band compressor patch on my Micro Modular doesn't really do much. It's much better to use it as a synth than as any type of thru processor. Keyboard sounds, typically, need no compression at all.

It just occurred to me that you may be running your synths in this configuration for lack of a mixer. This is a small mixer from a reputable mail order firm who may or may not ship to the EU. If you are in the military they may ship to an APO/FPO address.

Yup, that's exactly why I have my synths running through each other... No mixer!.. I made the mistake a few years ago when I bought a cheap DJ mixer..damn noisy thing!

I'll take a look at that mixer... I've ordered from zzounds.com before, yup, my wife is in the Airforce :) I'll have to see if they mail to APO AE addresses. $50 is pretty cheap for a mmixer isn't it?

Thanks!

where you stationed at? (just outta curiousity)

I've run into many companys that won't ship to an APO. BUT, try this if they don't. Let them know that they are only footing the bill to New York. Uncle Sam pays from there. Also, gotta keep in mind the weight and dimension factor when ordering, too. what you want sent isn't a problem though.
