Hey folks,

I need a mic for the snare, kick, and two overheads to start off with, plus a USB interface to get the audio tracks into Cubase.

Any suggestions? Not holding a lot of cash at the moment, but plan to be hopefully (after I rob a bank :p ) so price could be an issue, but a good range of prices would be useful.

Many thanks in advance.

I think you're gonna need more than a USB interface to get 4 tracks in at once, although I could be wrong. You might need a firewire setup.

As for mics, there's too many possibilities to list. Get on one of the online retailer websites and look around in your price range.

It really depends on you budget. A really nice setup would be an AKG D112 for bass, SM57 for snare, and a pair of C1000s or SM81s for overheads. This will cost around $800. If you're on a budget you could get a cheap kick drum mic by Nady or CAD, an SM57 for snare, and Studio Project B1s or Behringer C2s for overheads. This will be around $350. As for the interface, 4 input USB interfaces that I know of are the Lexicon Lambda, and the M audio fast track 8x8.

If you're playing rock, get a D6 for your kick. It gets you right sound every time with a minimum of fuss.

If you're playing anything where you want more than just thump and beater click, probably get a different mic...

Check out the Apex drum kit which I think is a 7 piece for cheap then you'll have a few extras hanging around.

The Lexicon Omega is a real bargain for what you get as far as interfaces, it will do 4 ch at once but there's only two pre's so you'd need two more pre's for the line in inputs. The reverb that comes with that unit is killer. You can get them dirt cheap. The monitoring setup on that unit is a bit odd. There was one that went for $55 + 15 shipping on eBay lately, that was probably unusually cheap.

I use KM84's as overheads. I have a pair of SM81's too and they are a different version of nice.

For snare I have an SM57 and have used it, but I prefer an EV PL11 (I got for free) and you see those for dirt cheap but not too often.

There's lots of dynamic mics that don't have great high end and they're cheap. If you get most of your snare high end from the overheads you don't need a million dollar mic on the snare.

Most modern USB interfaces are well capable of 8+ inputs, the latest Tascam one springs to mind.
