yes, the mic looks as a LD condenser mic like Samson C01.
but in fact it is a small diaphragm mic, just like some speakers: with small magnet to low down the cost.

heres a quote from their site John.

"The BEHRINGER C-1 is a professional and super-affordable
Large-Diaphragmcondenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. It provides all the performance youd expect in a top-notch professional condenser microphone: exceptionally flat frequency response, ultra low-noise transformerless FET input circuitry and incredible audio transparency."

do you have experience with Samson C01 LD mic? do you have experience with Behringer C-1

Great for recording vocals, acoustic instruments and for use as overhead drum mics, the new Samson C01 large diaphragm condenser microphone is accurate, detailed, smooth with warm bass and extended top end. This sturdy microphone has a large 19mm diaphragm that produces a smooth flat frequency response. It features a heavy gauge mesh grill screen, a gold plated XLR connecter and an LED indicating 48V phantom power. The unit includes a swivel stand mount and an optional SP01 shock mount is available.

in fact , the out side plastic holder is 19 mm in diameter.
then I can say that the Neumann U87 is 50 mm in diameter, because the diameter of the head stock is 50 mm.

what does a LD mic means? diaphragm large than 10mm? 15mm? 20mmm? 25mm?
or the diameter of capsule holder is large than ****?
no one decide the dimension.
16mm is large than 6mm, then some one can decalre that 16mm is LD mic.

Hey Deep, is $100 to much for ya? Because I just got 2 mics for that price mxl990 and 991. There's your LDC and SDC in a kit and I like them, but there's opinions on the 990, but the 991 is a mxl603s repackaged.

Of course, if you have higher signal levels and want an SDC omni, you have the $40 ecm8000, but you probably know about that one already.

berry also has the b5, and that has 2 caps, the omni and cardiod, I think it's $90.

what else? I think there are more also in the almost-free category. I don't know much about the samsons, but they have a few also. I'd like to know more about them but I didn't research them yet, since I have a handful of mics now to play with for a while.

from my experience, ECM8000 is a "pure" electret condenser mic with a 6mm ECM(you can find that like ECM everywhere at not more than 0.5 USD).
noisy , much low dynamic range of SPL.
I think that the source price should be around 5 USD from China at quantity of 1K pcs at a lot.
only benifit is : the frequency response is good sometimes.

The standard definition for a large diaphragm mic is that the actual diaphragm is one inch across, or greater.

music123.com is selling them now, and ship in 1-2 weeks.
I have 2 on order.

So it's not a LDC?

The Berry C1 is a LDC but the ecm8000 is a SDC
The ecm8000s are great mics. Very handy (tops as overheads). They give a very acurate recording of what the room you are in actually sounds like and because they are really a measurement mic you'll never outgrow them. If you haven't got a pair yet you can usually get them for for around $90 each

Why the hell would behri wnat to make a mike that looks like the samson?

That CO1 was one of my first (and probably worst) first recording buys. If the behri sounds as much as it looks like it I'd steer well clear.

well, for those of us with no money, it's better than a kick in the pants.

I was expecting that.

Perhaps to those woh can afford more expensive mics the cheap ones seem like folly, but fir those who are just starting out and jhave no money, but still want to record with condensers, they are a good option.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no gear snob. There are just several reasonably good mics around that are ridiculously cheap (comparatively speaking)- I use a MXL V67G as my main vocal mic and am looking at a SP B1 as an addition.

I didn't comment on the Behri mic's performance as I've never used one. As I said I bought a Samson CO1 when I first started recording and it's not a microphone I care for. I can't undrstand why behri would want to rip off the external design of the thing.

If you seriously cannaot afford $90 as opposed to $40 then I agree that that behri mic is better than nothing.

LAscalaboy - just maybe some ideas to try if little money.
you can build your own mics from little wma panasonic capsules sold by digikey. i think the capsules are 3 bucks or so. look for under "google"
the article TAPEOP microphone. if you rech the article its very informative on a step by step basis.
secondly an old trick is to use a discarded speaker as a microphone.
just wire it up to a qtr inch jack then into the mic input on a relations old discarded cassette deck , and send the line out of the cassette deck to sound card line in.
i know some purists will laugh but i and many others have had decent tracks
particularly on loud guitar amps. sometimes ive even got a better texture than a more expensive mic using this approach. sometimes on kik drum folks have reported good results.
one cheap condenser also people have told me they like is the cad gxl series.
but just try it for yourself. others have mentioned MCA i think it is.
gotta start somewhere. actually i think sometimes having little money is good. sometimes ive heard better songs come out of diy/self build approaches. it forces innovation.
good luck to you and hope this helps.

I have a cheap Tenlux dunamic that I'm using... it's ok for guitars, but it doesn't like baritone vocals.... but I think I can save up AU$75 for a condenser... thanks tho.

Is the MXL 990 any good for vocals? it's an LDC, right? just wondering...
I'm planning to buy 603 for guitar, and 990 for vocals?

I currently own a Beringer UB1002 mixer, are those preamps good for the job? or do you recommend any other good ones?

Oh, and something else: what's the advantage of miking the guitar with two MXL603's instead of one?

thanks,
Stan.

well, I think I like my 990 for vocals, I only tried it once. I have 2 pre's that sound pretty different from eachother. That's another story though. I also have the v67 that I've used for vocals and acoustic guitar and it was pretty good, no noise that I could hear, good level coming out of it. I guess I'll have to do a little test and compare thru same pre, maybe this weekend.

Oh yea, one thing I did was record drums 6 feet away off to one side with the 990, odd, but small room and it was not bad, but my pre level was too high and it has some sick distortion, but that sound is growing on me. Maybe I'll post it up fyi.
