Hey ive only tried one compressor... the 3630. It doesnt seem too bad to me, what do you guys not like about it?

Thanks!
Drake

Its the equivilant to beating you head with a hammer.

It does compress yes.
But not in a musical way.
The character it adds to the signal is quite unpleasureable IMO.

The only way to find this out for yourself is to buy a different compressor and A/B the two.

Try a DBX 166 or 160, or a RNC.

Youll know what i mean then.

I have 5 of them. I like them for the price and it is the only compressor I have used. I am scouring eBay looking for more because when they become vintage, I want to sell them and maybe make a few $$$

Oh yeah, I heard about them from Harmony Central, another professional recording site.

I've used them and i quite liked them on some basses.

The crap ones that have a crap sound. So use the 3630, and it gives it a tone. Not a nice one, but better than the one it had before

Fyi -

I know these things have been trashed on this site more times than just about any other piece of gear that is with the exception of anything Behringer.

There is however an article in the Jan/Feb issue of Tape Op that details a simple modification that, at least according to the article, seems to make a big difference

I recommend getting an RNC compressor as well. They're $175 new and better than anything close to their price range. Once you hear it in comparision to the 3630 you'll understand why people give the 3630 a hard time.

I reckon they'll be worth much less than the original retail, so I wouldn't plan on a big cash windfall. :D I used to own one back in the 90's (my first compressor), and sold it in 2000 for about $50. I kinda feel bad for the guy that bought it

Drake: I put another vote in for the RNC. You'd just have to hear the difference and I know you'd be impressed.
