i was reading about the true tape 32 setting and was wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages to using this. currently, all my recordings are being done at 16 bit, is there a big advantage with recording in true tape?

truetape is an effect - try it both ways, see which you like. I think TrueTape32 used a special high end tape algorithm, so it might give you more realistic tape emulation than others.

How is it in terms of file size? Would making a file truetape increase cpu usage or have any adverse effects?

What does this tape emulation effect sound like?
sounds damn good when i record my vocals.. then i also use a magneto plugin on my vocals right now b/c i don't have a tube preamp yet.

I agree that the TrueTape sounds great. I played with it a bit to get the sound I prefer for my vocals and once I got it dialed in I have to say it's the closest to getting that analog sound that I was looking for.

Ashura, I know I read in the manual that you can use it even if your just doing 16 bit recording. I can't remember how it works around it, but the manual said you can use it in 16 bit. I don't think it would take up any more CPU usage than any other effect would, as a matter of fact once you recorded with it, it is burned with your track and can't be undone so on playback it actually uses less CPU than the other effects do. Personally I find that to be the biggest drawback to it (that it is burned with the track in the recording stage) because I like to play with how my tracks sound. Sometimes you add all the tracks together and a track that sounded great before, suddenly needs some adjusting because of the new overall sound of the whole song.

Minor gripe for what it does to my sound though.

I stand corrected. This issue just came up at another site. TrueTape can be used with a 16 or 24 bit SOUNDCARD, but the recording has to be done in 32 bit floating format. How the hell this works is beyond me. I just remembered reading about it in the manual.

In this case, Ashura, your files would be larger than standard 16 bit.
