Hows everyone
Ok I need some help. I am looking to buy some equipment within the next two weeks. I trying to build a home studio for producing hip/hop and r&b tracks. I have done tracks in other people studios but now I'am looking to get my own. I looking to buy somemore equipment to go with my existing setup. I have a Fast computer, delta 1010 soundcard, Roland xp-80 and a Mpc200xl and thats it. I have had this setup for months but I haven't done anything with it because I felt I didn't have everything. I know I need more but I don't know what to get. I was looking ito getting a

spririt M series or mackie mixes ( but why would I need a mixer. In doing hip hop would a mixer be a waste of money)

Triton Rack( would I need this with the xp-80)

Mo phatt rack (would I need this with the xp-80 and triton rack)

event 20/20 monitors or yahamaMSP5S monitor package)

but what else would I need. Can you give me some direction on what to purchase and why.

Question 2
I also play the guitar, can you tell me what would I need to incorporate into my setup to allow me to play the guiar on my track. I know the mpc can record short samples, but what if I had a r&b track that I would want to add guitar on, what would I have to buy to allow me to do this.

P.S. If you guys have any other equipment suggestion please help.

better monitors

i wouldnt skimp on the monitors.

at least mackie hr824 or genelec 1030a. those events sound like ass in comparison. (go to your local dealer and check it out)

you can get them used for around $1000, of course more $ new.

why bother with all that fancy stuff if you cant even hear what your are doing?

I have monitors now but there are those SOrry-ass behringer truths. I get of my monitors picking up every radio station in Louisiana

I agree. ;)

All you need in your setup is a good set of monitors.

I would also suggest that you get an additional pair of speakers to act as an extra referencing source.

If your budget is $3k., get the Mackies or Genelecs AND some regular commercial speakers.

Peace......

Post Script........................

If you were on a serious budget, I would have suggest one of the Event products.

But............. you have $3,000.00 USD, so go for it. ;)

thanks for help about the monitors

but are there any suggestion about the quipment listed are any other equipment I might need. My budget can stretch between $3000-4000. The reason I'am willing to spend so much is because I have been doing tracks for a few New Orleans rappers in their studio and they have paid very well, so Iam going to get all my own equipment so I can step my production up a notch.

Thanks

send the money to me, and I'll send you a list of things you need.

Attention! Attention!!! All those who need help spending money on recording equipment, send it to me. Send me half that way you'll have less to worry about. Sorry but I couldn't resist:D

Get some dope monitors... MACKIES or GENELECS if you can afford it. They just sounds dope. You're gonna want these to be your best friends for a few years.

Get a dope mic setup... I use a Audio Technica 4033 and everytime I suggest it somebody will second it. I suggest something in the $300+ range... In most cases they get doper sounding by the bill... Preamps are kinda up in the air but anything will usually be better than your soundcards pres. Something with digital output will keep you signal clean as all hell.

The Triton is a dope peice but unless you know your existing shit in and out then you could be cool with the MPC, XP combo. Buy some hip hop sample disks if you want ill sounds quick. Me myself... I try to make em... TYou should try it to... Get a computer sound editor for you XP and buy a copy of MPC EDITOR. It might give you a unique sound.

You are talking about epanding quickly so you will want a mixer that can handle your ambitions... Also tracking that shit is all day if you don't have the proper ins and outs. Why I chose the MACKIE 1604... I have mines setup to track 4 tracks out at a time. Also sounds good and will always have a place in my setup... 16 ins still isn't even enough for me though... Looking like 24 is next (too much shit)... If you are talking XP (4...I think) MPC ( the 2 stereo + the 8 out out=10), MIC (1 if you go that route)... That's already got it loaded right... Even if you are not running em like that it's good to know you can ifin you want to. 12 just can't handle ya... I got my VCR, CD player, video shit and all running through my 1604...

Damn how do these posts get this long... I got a post length limit or something. ;)

Take what yoy got left and breaky a boy off a bill or 2 for this valuable information...:D Peace to ya...

You pretty much got everything

I don't post often but i've learned alot, read alot, experimented alot and all that yada yada

Are you going to be recording vocal?? If you so you definitely don't wanna skimp on a lame azz preamp either.

As far as sounds go, you have everything already in the XP80 and the mpc2000xl. You buy some tight azz sample cd's for the mpc and you'll have all the drums you'll need for several months. Like ol' boy said if you haven't learned what you already have, in and out, then you don't need to buy more production type equipment(synths, drum machines, modules, etc).

The only thing I see you needing right now is tight azz monitors(peep the Yorkville ysmp1p that's the powered model....they don't spend big time marketing money so you've probably neva heard of them, but they use the same components that Mackies use.) I use them and what i hear in the studio i usually hear in my car(factory speakers in honda 2000 civic ex) and on my djing equipment(i like to take a mix and listen to them on the dj equipment so i have a generally idea what it will sound like in a club or when we are djing a party).

I have the yamaha motif 6 and the mpc2000xl(i bought my mpc when i was in afghanistan back in may-sept., i got it shipped out there too, and i was making some hot azz tracks just using that with no keyboard)........you have to teach yourself to be a tweak god using samples that you download or purchase from some company.

So to sum it up

1. nice monitors(genelecs, mackies, yorkvilles)
2. nice mic preamps( I use a Fat Man 3 compressor/preamp, and for hip hop it does what i want it to do.......i also have a live guitarist and we always run his guitars through it too....it's pretty tight)
3. nice azz microphone(we use a Groove Tube AM52 mic, i don't know if you can find it though, groove tube was a susidairy of alesis and when alesis went out of business i dont know if they kept doing their thang, but i caught it brand new for $200 and it was a $800 mic before alesis went out).

4. maybe get a nice record player that plays 45 and 33 and buy some records to sample into your mpc and tweak the sounds, or sample into your computer and apply effects to it before putting it into your mpc and assigning it to a pad.

Start tweaking stuff and then you are limitless in making music cause you will start to get good at it and once you get on a roll it's really hard to get off and things just start to click. What's really nice is midi-ing your mpc to your computer and controlling the start/stop functions with your multitrack program so your music is in perfect sync. Then to record your stuff just solo each track from your mpc and record your sequences...oh yeah midi your XP80 to your mpc and record midi from your keyboard to the mpc.........that simplifies recording your music, and then you don't have to have a mixer, you have enough inputs with the delta1010.

I have some tracks i don't have them on the internet, because i'm in the process of setting up my own server and hosting my own site, but i could email ya some tracks and tell you what i did to achieve what i achieve so you realize you don't need a whole gang of equipment ........save your money and invest it, or get business cards and other business type materials and get your name out more so you can get more clientele.

Thanks flossy
that was just the information I needed to hear. One question, I have tried to midi my xp-80 to the mpc to the computer but I don't understand how to do it. THe manual really don't get into detail but I was told that I have to make one the master and the slave or something like that. If you can, will you break it down on how to do it, or at least give me some idea. Also what software are you using. I will email you with my email address so I can hear some of you tracks.

1. The information that LAZI and flossboy gave you was GREAT!

2. You have a wonderful set-up already. :D

3. The weakest link in your set-up was the fact that you didn't have quality monitors. ;)

4. Until you know your equipment (INSIDE and OUT), there really isn't any reason for you to substitute pieces.

When you are ready to spend a lot more money.......... I would suggest this............
