Does anyone care to recomend a good versatile guitar in the $300-$500 range? I'm considering a standard strat but I'm not completely set on it. What do you all think?

You cannot go wrong with a Standard Strat or an Epi Les Paul. They will retain some value, are recognizable and easily re-sold.

I LOVE inexpensive [as opposed to cheap] guitars!!! I just grabbed me a Squire Classic Vibe 50's Tele...love it.

www.RondoMusic.com - been around for a while, you can google for reviews by model number. Outstanding service and great deals on guitars - some are "mod platforms", others excellent as is. most of them have better woods than Squier (and likely MIM fenders) or even "cheaper" Epiphones.

and yes, they are "inexpensive [as opposed to cheap] guitars", even their cheap strats/teles/basses.

Check out the Ibanez GAX70. Helluva guitar for only $200.00! I've tried too many to keep track of (more than 12), and only experienced 1 dud. For the price, and your proposed price range, you'd have enough left over for a bitchin' small practice amp...tube or solid-state.

Look for a used Fender Showmaster Flamed Ash Top (F.A.T.) It's kind of orangey, but what a great strat sound! I scored mine for $500, but they go for less, too.
Nice flame on it-- it totally moves when I move it under the light.

I always plug the Godin guits in this price range. The Performance series offers some very well made, inexpensive Canadian guits.

Look for a used G&L guitar. They can be found for $500. Their resale value is quite low since they don't carry the "name" of Fender.

I think a lot of people would agree that G&L gives you a better Fender than Fender does!
I think the cant-go-wrong guitars on this price range are the Mexican Standard Strat, the Mexican Standard Tele, and the set-neck Epiphone Les Pauls.
There are so many choices since this is such a huge target price range for so many guitarists around the world. There have been some great suggestions listed so far.
But I think that the most important piece of advice that gets thrown around about guitars in this price range (no matter who the manufacturer or what name is on the headstock), is to actually PLAY the guitar before you buy it. Quality assurance is a little difficult due to the massive numbers of guitars produced for this target price range. You could have a lemon and a gem come off of the assembly line right next to each other.
Get your hands on it, play it yourself, and you be the judge.
